According to a quote on the back cover of this book, Travel and Leisure Magazine calls this book "The Bible of Bhutan Guidebooks."? To me the most salient feature of this book is that it is written by an actual resident of Bhutan (who updates it regularly), who was also a research assistant in the Bhutan Tourism Corporation and also a research assistant in history in the Dept. of Education, Royal Government of Bhutan.? Although Pommaret gives some attention to the traditional tourism fare (hotels/food/shopping), her main focus is the Bhutanese history, culture, and society, enhancing her writing with 83 beautiful color photographs.? Pommaret provides little known insights into this private and proud Himalayan Kingdom, a country whose government sees preserving its culture as paramount.? Since Pommaret is French and this book is a translation, there are spelling and English usage errors; nothing, however, that is terribly distracting.? The book was printed in Hong Kong, which may account for why I found reading it at night, under lamp light, very diffictul insofar as the pages are extremely glossy and, thus, highly reflective, making reading difficult on the eyes.? Highly recommended!
