Jitterbug Touch (GreatCall)

Have you thought about getting a smartphone, but fear you won't know how to use it? GreatCall has just the phone for you. Sort of. Known for simple feature phones like the Editors' Choice-winning Jitterbug Plus, GreatCall is now offering the $149 Jitterbug Touch, a smartphone for seniors. The Jitterbug Touch is a keyboarded Android phone with a simplified user interface that makes it easier to understand for new users. Unfortunately, that new user interface is sometimes sloppy, and not everything is as simple as it should be. It's also running on dated hardware that hasn't aged gracefully. The Jitterbug Touch from GreatCall is an okay introduction to smartphones for seniors, but it isn't as simple as it should be.

Design, Call Quality, and Data Plans
The Jitterbug Touch is actually the same phone as the?Kyocera Milano? that we reviewed on Sprint over a year ago. Here it's been rebranded and loaded with GreatCall's simplified user interface.

As far as design goes, the Jitterbug Touch is identical to the Milano. It's short and squat, at 4.13 by 2.4 by 0.67 inches (HWD), and a bit heavy at 5.57 ounces. The back panel is made of a matte gray soft-touch plastic and features the GreatCall name and logo in black beneath an imprinted Kyocera logo.

The display is a 3-inch, 320-by-240-pixel touch panel, which is really starting to look lackluster. I dinged the Milano for this a year ago, and it only looks worse now. Compared with the display on a standard feature phone it isn't terrible, but this is about as low as you can go on a smartphone. The screen itself is too small, and the low resolution makes everything look fuzzy or jagged. It becomes a little easier to see when you crank up the brightness to the highest level, but the automatic setting is way too dark.

The Jitterbug Touch slides open to reveal a four-row QWERTY keyboard. It features keys that are well-sized, raised, and backlit. It's easy to type on, though the phone itself is short, so there isn't much room to stretch your thumbs out and really get going. Still, this phone will work just fine if you want to send text messages or emails.

There are four physical function keys below the display that work fine, though you can see the phone's backlight through them, which is annoying. There's a Power button and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on top of the phone, a Volume rocker and power port on the left, and a Camera shutter button on the right.

GreatCall uses Verizon's network. The Jitterbug Touch is a 3G device, but only hits EV-DO Rev. 0 speeds, which aren't as fast as EV-DO Rev. A and nowhere near as fast as 4G LTE. I saw data speeds of just 0.1Mbps down and 0.3Mbps up on the Jitterbug Touch, which is slow, even for EV-DO Rev. 0. But GreatCall's data plans are small, so this guarantees you won't be able to fly through your monthly allotment. The Jitterbug Touch also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Reception and voice quality are average. Voices sound somewhat scratchy and robotic in the phone's earpiece, but are still easy to understand and plenty loud. Calls made with the phone sound a little muted and grainy, and noise cancellation is poor. Calls were fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset, and standard Android voice dialing worked well. I had some trouble connecting to the headset, which I'll explain further below. The phone is also hearing aid compatible with an M4/T4 rating.?The speakerphone sounds good and is loud enough for outdoor use, and battery life was good at 9 hours and 57 minutes of talk time.

As for pricing, GreatCall's pay-as-you-go service plans start at $14.99 per month for 50 minutes, up to $79.99 per month for unlimited minutes, text messages, operator assistance, and voicemail. Otherwise, text messages are 10 cents each and voicemail costs an extra $3 per month.

Since this is a smartphone, you'll also want a data plan, which allows you to access the internet on the go. GreatCall's "Get Started" plan gets you 10MB of data for $2.49 per month. That sounds like a bargain, but keep in mind that 10MB of data won't go very far. You can use that up just by checking email. Calls do not consume data and you can always connect your phone to Wi-Fi, but if you plan to surf the Web on Verizon's network, GreatCall offers data plans up to 500MB per month for $25. The phone comes with an app to track your data usage, and if you go over your montly limit, it costs 20 cents per 1MB.

Android, Simplified UI, and Apps
The Jitterbug Touch is running Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). Ordinarily, such an old version of Android would make me cringe, but it's been Jitterbugged past the point of recognition. GreatCall has simplified the OS with a new interface that makes it fast and easy to access often-used features.

When you turn the phone on, you get two main tabs at the top of the screen: Apps and People. Each of these tabs, as well as the other menus, are laid out in scrolling lists with large fonts, which makes it easy to figure out everything your phone can do. Apps is a list of the applications you plan to use the most. It comes preloaded with Phone, Messaging, Camera, and Gallery, which, if you're looking to keep things simple, are pretty much all you need. You can add and remove apps from this list as you please. The People tab, meanwhile, allows you to store your favorite contacts. There are also touch buttons on the bottom of the screen which open tabs for All Apps and GreatCall services.

Movie Review: 'Hitchcock' ? CBS Philly

(Anthony Hopkins stars as the Master of Suspense and Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma, in ?Hitchcock.?)

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? ?What if someone really good made a horror picture??

So asks world-class director Alfred Hitchcock of his wife, Alma, in Hitchcock, as he contemplates taking on an uncharacteristic horror oddity called Psycho.

The rest, as they say, is Hitchery.

34 Movie Review: Hitchcock

(3 stars out of 4)

Call this one a film buff?s dream.? Hitchcock chronicles the gamble taken on by the Master of Suspense as he embarks on the production of a seemingly tasteless 1960 chiller that would appear on the surface to be beneath his artistic station.

Although Hitchcock is a speculative biographical comedy-drama about the legendary production of that self-financed film, it?s even more clearly focused on the relationship between the portly director, played by Anthony Hopkins, and his long-suffering wife and collaborator, Alma Reville, played by Helen Mirren, and the effect of the film on their relationship.

It could just as easily have been titled ?The Hitchcocks? or ?Hitch and Alma.? ? Or even ?Alma.?

They?re supported by, among others, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, the star of Psycho; Danny Huston as screenwriter Whitfield Cook, collaborating with Alma to the point of Hitchcock?s jealousy and distraction; Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson, Hitch?s assistant; Michael Stuhlbarg as Lew Wasserman, Hitch?s agent; Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, an actress in Psycho; Michael Wincott as Ed Gein, the real-life nightmarish inspiration for Psycho?s villain; and James d?Arcy, uncanny as Psycho actor Anthony Perkins.

This is director Sacha Gervasi?s second film and first narrative feature (he debuted with the well-received 2008 heavy-metal documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil), and it features a screenplay by John J. McLaughlin that?s loosely based on the 1990 Stephen Rebello book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of ?Psycho.?

There is a treasure trove of interesting details, even if none of them are revelatory, a bit too much of the dialogue is on-the-nose, and several of Gervasi?s stylistic flourishes -? for example, Hitchcock?s paranoid visions ?- distract rather than embellish.

Neither is Hitchcock helped by the curious lack of any footage from the finished film (due to legal restrictions, apparently, although that didn?t seem to stop director Gus Van Sant in his shot-by-shot remake).

That shots and scenes are familiar would not reduce their appropriateness, and we long and expect to see them and miss them when they never arrive.

All that said, however, this is a highly watchable docudrama about an endlessly fascinating moviemaker, a highly influential movie, and a finally acknowledged creative partner.

Hopkins offers a witty and telling impersonation of the iconic Hitch, with his unmistakable diction and posture, while Mirren contributes a tremendously sympathetic and understated portrait of the softspoken but tart-tongued Alma, a patient and supportive but obviously frustrated and underappreciated (and absolutely essential) screenwriting partner.

That neither performer resembles his or her real-life counterpart does little if any harm.

Hitchcock?s repression and perversity, as well as his capacity for cruelty, register here alongside his prodigious talent, just as they did in the recent HBO telefilm, The Girl, about his making of The Birds.

But this portrait of the troubled director does not paint him to be quite so one-dimensionally villainous.? And, to no one?s surprise, as he emerges yet again, he remains enigmatic.

So we?ll direct 3 stars out of 4 for Hitchcock.? It doesn?t exactly go off without a hitch, but it?s an entertaining, behind-the-scenes, scenes-from-a-marriage exploration -? admittedly superficial but nonetheless entertaining ? that no admirer of the director?s storied works will want to miss.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will host his former political rival Mitt Romney for a private lunch at the White House Thursday, their first meeting since the election.

Obama promised in his victory speech earlier this month to engage with Romney following their bitter campaign and consider the Republican's ideas.

"In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Gov. Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward," Obama said at the time.

Obama aides said they reached out to Romney's team shortly before Thanksgiving to start working on a date for the meeting. The two men will meet in the White House's private dining room, with no press coverage expected.

In the days after his loss, Romney told top donors that the president was re-elected because of the "gifts" Obama provided to blacks, Hispanics and young voters, all of which are core Obama constituencies.

"The president's campaign, if you will, focused on giving targeted groups a big gift," Romney said.

Many Republican officials, eager to move on quickly after the loss, disputed Romney's comments and urged the party to focus on being more inclusive.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama was looking forward to having a "useful discussion" with his former competitor. But he said there was no formal agenda for the lunch.

While in Washington, Romney will also meet with his former running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, according to a Romney campaign aide. Ryan is back on Capitol Hill, where he's involved in negotiations to avert a series of automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts that have come to be known as the "fiscal cliff."

Much of that debate centers on expiring tax cuts first passed by George W. Bush. Obama and Romney differed sharply during the campaign over what to do with the cuts, with the Republican pushing for them to be extended for all income earners and the president running on a pledge to let the cuts expire for families making more than $250,000 a year.

The White House sees Obama's victory as a signal that Americans support his tax proposals.

Obama and Romney's sit-down Thursday will likely be their most extensive private meeting ever. The two men had only a handful of brief exchanges before the 2012 election.

Even after their political fates became intertwined, their interactions were largely confined to the three presidential debates.

Romney has virtually disappeared from politics following his loss in the Nov. 6 election. He's spent the last three weeks largely in seclusion at his family's southern California home. He has made no public appearances, drawing media attention only after being photographed at Disneyland in addition to stops at the movies and the gym with his wife, Ann.

Former aides confirm that Romney is expected to move into an office at the Boston-area venture capital firm Solamere Capital. The firm was founded by his oldest son, Tagg Romney, and Spencer Zwick, who served as his presidential campaign's national finance chairman.

It's unclear what role, if any, Romney will play at the firm. Former aides said Romney was subletting office space from Solamere.

Samsung takes aim at Japanese rivals with Android camera

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co is taking aim at its Japanese rivals with an Android-powered digital camera that allows users to swiftly and wirelessly upload pictures to social networking sites.

The Galaxy camera lets users connect to a mobile network or Wi-Fi to share photographs and video without having to hook up the camera to a computer.

While it's not the first to the market, Samsung's financial and marketing clout suggest it could be the biggest threat to Japanese domination of a digital camera industry which research firm Lucintel sees growing to $46 billion by 2017 and where big brands include Canon Inc, Sony Corp, Panasonic Corp, Nikon Corp and Olympus Corp.

"Samsung has a tough row to hoe against the likes of Canon and Nikon in the camera brand equity landscape," said Liz Cutting, senior imaging analyst at research firm NPD Group. "Yet as a brand known more in the connected electronic device arena, Samsung has a unique opportunity to transfer strength from adjacent categories into the dedicated camera world."

The Korean group, battling for mobile gadget supremacy against Apple Inc, is already a global market leader in televisions, smartphones and memory chips.

Samsung last year brought its camera and digital imaging business - one of its smallest - under the supervision of JK Shin, who heads a mobile business that generated 70 percent of Samsung's $7.4 billion third-quarter profit.

"Our camera business is quickly evolving ... and I think it will be able to set a new landmark for Samsung," Shin said on Thursday at a launch event in Seoul. "The product will open a new chapter in communications - visual communications," he said, noting good reviews for the Samsung Galaxy camera which went on sale in Europe and the United States earlier this month.

AIMING AT 'PRO-SUMERS'

The Galaxy camera, which sells in the United States for $499.99 through AT&T with various monthly data plans, features a 4.8-inch LCD touchscreen and a 21x optical zoom lens. Users can send photos instantly to other mobile devices via a 4G network, access the Internet, email and social network sites, edit photos and play games.

The easy-to-use camera, and the quality of the pictures, is aimed at mid-market 'pro-sumers' - not quite professional photographers but those who don't mind paying a premium for user options not yet available on a smartphone - such as an optical, rather than digital, zoom, better flash, and image stabilization.

The appeal of high picture quality cameras with wireless connection has grown as social media services such as Facebook Inc drive a boom in rapid shoot-and-share photos.

"At a price point higher than some entry-level interchangeable-lens cameras, the Galaxy camera should appeal to a consumer willing to pay an initial and ongoing premium for 24/7 creative interactivity," said Cutting.

Traditional digital camera makers are responding.

Canon, considered a leader in profitability in corporate Japan with its aggressive cost cutting, saw its compact camera sales eroded in the most recent quarter by smartphones, and has just introduced its first mirrorless camera to tap into a growing market for small, interchangeable-lens cameras that rival Nikon entered last year.

Nikon has also recently introduced an Android-embedded Wi-Fi only camera.

?Sweet Bites and Savory Sensations? Come to Lincoln Hospital At Launch of Ethnic Cookbook Featuring Local Seniors? Traditional Recipes?

-Recipes Modified to Reduce Fat, Sodium and Sugar Content-?

Bronx, New York - Lincoln Medical Center today presented its first Seniors Cookbook?a collection of traditional family recipes that have been modified to reduce fat, sodium and sugar content to provide healthy eating recipes that preserve ethnic, culinary traditions. Titled Sweet Bites and Savory Sensations: Bronx Home Cooking, the book contains 44 delicious recipes contributed by seniors from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Nigeria, and represents the rich diversity of the South Bronx and the culinary customs of our community. Lincoln Hospital Executive Director Iris R. Jimenez-Hernandez was joined by New York City Department for the Aging Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli and a group of seniors at a reception announcing the launch of the English/Spanish cookbook, which will be distributed by Lincoln Hospital doctors to patients at risk of diabetes, hypertension and other chronic conditions and diseases.

At a time when the epidemic of overweight and obesity and related diseases is the subject of public discourse at the national and local levels, this project connects to the numerous initiatives taking place to improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities among ethnic minorities and poor communities. Within this context, it is important to note that the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has reported that one in 4 adults is obese in this community. The prevalence of obesity among public high school students and adults 45 to 64 years of age is higher in the South Bronx than in the city as a whole.

The Bronx Home Cooking project has garnered the support of a number of senior centers, neighborhood supermarkets, and community restaurants that have partnered with the hospital to promote healthier eating. Five restaurants have agreed to include selected recipes in their menus to give their patrons healthier choices.

?This cookbook is a taste of home that will inspire many to eat healthier while remaining true to the flavorful, traditional meals we have learned to enjoy,? said Iris R. Jimenez-Hernandez, HHC Senior Vice President and Lincoln Hospital Executive Director, who commissioned the cookbook. ?As the medical community and other public and private sectors continue to promote the importance of a balanced diet to live a longer and healthier life, Sweet Bites and Savory Sensations: Bronx Home Cooking offers wholesome recipes that honor our culture in a healthy way.?

?Healthy eating habits are extremely important, particularly as we grow older,? said Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, commissioner for the Department for the Aging. ?The nutritious recipes in Lincoln Hospital?s senior cookbook make it easier for seniors to make smart choices. DFTA promotes the importance of healthy living through the nutritious meals served at senior centers, the wellness programs offered to center members and through our outreach efforts to the general public.? 2

?Obesity is a major concern in the South Bronx,? said Melissa P. Schori, Lincoln Hospital?s Chief Medical Officer. ?Poor diet and physical inactivity are the most prevalent factors contributing to an epidemic of overweight and obesity affecting men, women and children in our community.?

Sweet Bites and Savory Sensations: Bronx Home Cooking includes recipes for traditional dishes from Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Nigeria?countries that represent the patient population served by Lincoln Hospital. Chef and registered dietician Diane Barrett and Chef and culinary instructor Annie Morgan modified each recipe to incorporate healthier ingredients.

Speaking on behalf of those who collaborated with the Cookbook project, Mrs. Jimenez-Hern?ndez thanked and acknowledged the partnership of the following establishments: El Valle Restaurants, Glen Roy?s Tavern, Havana Caf? and Yolanda?s Restaurant as well as Pioneer Supermarkets. Restaurants are offering 10% discounts on dishes they have selected from the cookbook and Pioneer Supermarkets are offering 5% off selected healthy items on Wednesdays.

?Healthy eating and physical activity go hand in hand,? said celebrity fitness expert Charity Lynette addressing the audience who gathered for the cookbook launch. Lynette, who is also a former basketball player, gave a fitness demonstration for young and older adults and spoke about the importance of choosing healthy foods and integrating exercise in everyday life.

?Those consumers who enjoy ethnic food will find some of the recipes simply irresistible,? said Chef and Registered Dietician Diane Barrett. ?Plantains with Sweet Bluefish from Honduras, Beef in Green Sauce from Peru, Chicken Casserole with Celery Root from Puerto Rico, Fufu and Jollof Rice from Nigeria are some of the delectable dishes that will help consumers to enjoy traditional recipes in a healthy way.? Frontier Baseball League at Murphy Candler for kids with Mild Challenges - Registration is Open / Space is Limited.

Several months ago I stepped outside my comfort zone and volunteered to coach my sons baseball team as he and a group of special boys joined together to play in the new Frontier League at Murphey Candler. Many of the boys, like Jackson shown above, had never played organized baseball and though eager to play, they too were far outside their comfort zone. Together the boys and I learned the fundamentals of baseball, had fun and the boys as a team encouraged and cheered for each others successes. This evening I just signed up to coach baseball once again.

The Frontier League at Murphey Candler Baseball is designed for kids between ages 7 and 12 with mild life challenges. Teams are very small with about 10 kids each and the league is divided into younger and older age brackets. Is DIY In Your DNA? | Fast Horse

I grew up in a very DIY family. My parents built our first home, and I mean they actually built it. There was no hiring out of tough jobs or allowing others to oversee the process; they built a two-story, three-bedroom home from the ground up. My mother hung sheet rock and laid tile all while nine months pregnant with me. She?s a brute.

When I was 10, we moved to town and lived in a home that was built in 1877. My parents gutted the entire thing and, you guessed it, started from scratch so they could DIY. By this time I was accustomed to falling asleep to my father pounding nails or sanding floors, but after a while I just wanted a ?normal? house without an inch of?sheet rock?dust under my feet. I always swore to my parents that I would NEVER live in an unfinished home when I grew up, and would always hire other people to do the work.

My actual floor.

Ha! Fast forward to today and guess what I did all weekend ? sanded our hardwood floors so we could re-stain them. Yep, the DIY bug was not something I could escape from and now I live in a ?fixer upper? and can honestly say that I am proud to be a DIYer.

I have to give props to my ?rents for doing all this DIYing before there was an arsenal of tips and tricks available at their fingertips. When my boyfriend and I encounter a problem, we have the option of quickly looking up a how-to on YouTube or a quick search in Google to help us solve the issue. My favorite way of acquiring information is a good ol? DIY/home improvement blog. I love a good blog. A step-by-step guide to how the average Joe attacks a home improvement project, along with real-life tid bits of information that you only get from messing it up yourself first.

I am such a fan of a certain DIY blog that I recently stood in line for four hours to catch a glimpse of the real people behind my favorite blog, Young House Love. I?ve followed this blog religiously well before I had my own home to renovate, but fell in love with their quirky style and funny home improvement tips enough to check their blog daily (sometimes multiple times a day).

So whether you fancy yourself a?die-hard?home improvement buff like my parents or maybe you reach your limit at painting an accent wall, in today?s DIY-world you will always have a place to find inspiration and guidance. Maybe you will even become so inspired (see Young House Love, I swear you will get hooked) that you will completely change your mind, like me, and decide doing it yourself?isn?t?so bad after all.

Activists: Syrian rebels seize major dam in north

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian rebels have captured a hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates river in the country's north in a strategic victory that followed days of fighting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the Tishrin Dam, near the town of Manbij, fell to the rebels before dawn on Monday.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, says the dam supplies several areas of Syria with electricity.

The rebels have been making strategic advances recently. On Sunday, they briefly captured a regime helicopter base outside Damascus.

Syria's conflict started in March 2011 as uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts.

It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

Canada's Carney named as Bank of England chief

LONDON/OTTAWA (Reuters) - Britain named Canadian central bank chief Mark Carney on Monday to head the Bank of England, springing the surprise choice of a foreigner to push reform of its troubled financial system.

A former Goldman Sachs investment banker who at the Bank of Canada guided the Canadian economy through the global economic crisis, Carney will succeed Mervyn King who retires in July.

Carney, who already plays a leading role in setting global banking rules, defended his departure from Canada and signaled that bigger problems awaited him in London.

"I'm going to where the challenges are greatest," he told an Ottawa news conference, stressing the need to "rebalance" the economy which has relied heavily on a financial services sector hit by huge losses and scandals.

"It's very important for the global economy that the UK does well, that it succeeds in this rebalancing of their economy, that the reform of the British financial system is completed," he said.

Carney will become the first non-British head of the central bank in its 300-year history, beating hot favorite BoE deputy governor Paul Tucker to the post, which will pay a salary of 624,000 pounds ($1 million). The Bank of Canada does not disclose Carney's exact salary but says he is paid in a range equivalent to US$436,200-$513,000.

During the crisis, Carney helped to make Canada's recession one of the shallowest of the world's richest nations. No Canadian bank needed government help, and the country recovered all the jobs it lost in the downturn relatively rapidly.

By contrast, Britain had to bail out Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group, and the world's sixth-largest economy is still struggling to achieve growth four years after the crisis broke.

Carney, 47, will remain as head of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), a Basel-based body that sets global banking rules, when he moves to London next year, although the Bank of Canada itself does not regulate the country's banks.

"I believe he will bring the strong leadership and external experience that the Bank (of England) itself needs as it takes on its heavy new responsibilities for regulating our banking system," Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, the finance minister, told parliament in announcing the appointment.

Carney will stay at the Bank of Canada through May, and starts at the Bank of England in July. He will serve a five-year term, rather than the eight years that had been expected for the next BoE governor.

From next year the BoE will take charge of British financial regulation, almost doubling its size. This boosted the case for a governor with strong management skills and financial market experience, rather than someone in King's academic mould.

Carney's past as a Goldman Sachs investment banker has been a double-edged sword, as he fought to prove his loyalties lie with ordinary citizens, not his high-flying banker ex-colleagues. He clashed memorably last year with JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon in Washington, when the U.S. banker argued against new regulations for the financial sector.

DEAD MONEY

Carney also courted controversy in August when he accused Canadian firms of sitting on piles of "dead money", rather than investing it. Large British companies also have money to invest, but little appetite to do so at a time of strong economic risks.

How Carney's monetary policy experience will translate to Britain is less clear. Although the Bank of Canada has raised interest rates, unlike the BoE, economists said this reflected Canada's strong economy rather than a bias on Carney's part.

"Pragmatic is how I'd describe him," said Derek Burleton, an economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank. "He doesn't come across as an ideologue one way or the other."

Under King, the BoE has poured 375 billion pounds into the economy by buying government bonds. The Bank of Canada has not used this policy of "quantitative easing" largely because its economy never weakened enough to warrant it.

Until now, Carney had strongly played down the possibility of heading the British central bank. "(It's a) surprise, huge surprise," said Peter Dixon, an economist with Commerzbank. "That was the one guy I didn't have in the running.

Carney said he did not apply for his new job as part of the formal process, and discussions intensified only in the last two weeks.

He has already spent a decade in Britain as a postgraduate student at Oxford and at Goldman Sachs - where European Central Bank President Marin Draghi also once worked. Carney, whose wife is British, will apply for citizenship, Osborne said.

Carney pointed to the steady state of Canadian banks, which also contrasts to some of those in Britain that have been sucked into scandals over rigging the Libor interest rate and mis-selling financial products to people who didn't need them.

"We have a system that works very well. It's been tested under the biggest economic shock and financial shock that any of us will ever see in our lifetime, and it has passed that test," he said.

His job has been helped in recent years by booming prices for Canada's commodities exports from oil to gold and grain.

The still-athletic Carney - a sub-four-hour marathon runner - was once described as "un-Canadian" by one Ottawa official because of his sometimes confrontational style.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty expressed the mixed feelings in Ottawa about Carney's departure. "It's bitter-sweet. It's our loss. His loss will be felt," he said.

The foreign exchange market passed a similar judgment with sterling rising against both the U.S. and Canadian dollars. The pound hit to a 2-1/2 week high against the Canadian dollar to C$1.5950 from C$1.5898 beforehand.

Leadership to Promote a Culture of Safety | DHPro

By Carola Hicks

?

It is about effective leadership or, the process of directing the behavior of others toward the accomplishment of some common objectives; in this case working safely, in a safe environment. It does not mean that one person gets to ?boss? others but, does mean influencing people to get things done to a standard and quality to the benefit of office staff as well as patients.

?

What is leadership that promotes a culture of safety?
Organizational culture consists of attitudes, values and beliefs that are demonstrated in the workplace on a daily basis and affect the mental and physical well-being of employees; such as

  • respect
  • appreciation
  • commitment to?balanced workloads and job enrichment
  • decision latitude
  • employee involvement
  • support for work-life?balance

Strong leaders recognize that solid health and safety performance drives business results. They promote a culture of safety in their organizations, and integrate prevention measures into business strategies, processes and performance measures.

?

What the law says
The Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations set out clear requirements for creating a safe and healthy physical work environment. Leaders go beyond meeting their legal obligations, and seek instead to meet the spirit of the law, knowing that organizational performance depends on healthy, safe, engaged employees.

?

How leadership can help your organizational culture
Advocating within their practices for employee health and safety is a fundamental, achievable and critical role for leaders; it resonates powerfully at both a business and social level. The business case for health and safety resonates whether the organization is motivated by its bottom line, reputation, or social responsibility.

?

What you can do
A prevention culture begins and ends with a leader?s passion for health and safety. CEOs, owners and other leaders in a dental practice can transform the workplace by:

  • Making it personal -??who would tolerate an injury to oneself, one?s family members, or one?s?co-workers?
  • Demonstrating that?health and safety matters by visibly implementing policies and procedures?specifically addressing employees? health and safety
  • Making expectations?of staff known, and holding them accountable, for example, around the?critical issue of orientation training, which is often the weak link in an?organization?s health and safety performance

Organizational commitment to Workplace Health and Safety is an integral part of staff retention and well being. Increasing awareness and legislative emphasis is placing more responsibility on leaders to ensure that the health and safety of all individuals is recognized as a fundamental element of their businesses success.

?

Health and safety are everyone?s responsibility; that is the basis of the Internal Responsibility System. It takes a good leader to ensure accountability; demonstrate your interest in creating safety by doing things yourself. Poor leaders don?t do what they ask others to do. Great leaders use their own actions to demonstrate what is important.

Safer spinach? Scientist's technique dramatically reduces E. coli numbers

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? University of Illinois scientists have found a way to boost current industry capabilities when it comes to reducing the number of E. coli 0157:H7 cells that may live undetected on spinach leaves.

?By combining continuous ultrasound treatment with chlorine washing, we can reduce the total number of foodborne pathogenic bacteria by over 99.99 percent,? said Hao Feng, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.

According to Feng, the USDA is looking for proposed technologies that can achieve a 4 to 6 log reduction in pathogen cells (a 6 log reduction would achieve a million-fold reduction in pathogenic bacteria). The food processing industry can now achieve a 1 log or tenfold reduction. In comparison, the U of I technique yields a 4 log reduction.

?Combining technologies is the key to bridging the gap between our current capacity and what USDA would like to see. The use of ultrasound exposure during chlorine washing gives the industry a way to significantly enhance microbial safety,? he said.

Feng?s pilot-scale system uses three pairs of large-area ultrasonic transducer boxes to form a channel through which ultrasound is provided to spinach leaves that are undergoing a continuous-flow chlorine wash. Spatial uniformity of ultrasound distribution was confirmed by tests using metallic foil.

The scientist said that continuous flow and uniformity of the field are key elements in the success of the process.

?Previous work with ultrasound used a tank or a medical-style probe, which doesn?t provide consistent and even distribution,? he noted.

System design is important for another reason, he said. ?Placement of the produce as it makes its way through the channel turns out to be very important. We had to find ways to make sure that leaves received similar exposure to ultrasound, taking care to minimize the chance that one leaf would block a nearby leaf?s exposure to the sound waves.?

If even part of a leaf escaped the full ultrasonic treatment, it could contaminate the rest of the produce, he said.

Feng and his team have used the technique on iceberg and romaine lettuce as well as spinach with similar results.

Co-authors of the paper, published in Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, are the U of I?s Bin Zhou and Arne J. Pearlstein. Funding was provided by Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland, with additional support from the USDA.

New crab species discovered off the coast of Belize

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Areopaguristes tudgei. That's the name of a new species of hermit crab recently discovered on the barrier reef off the coast of Belize by Christopher Tudge, a biology professor at American University in Washington, D.C.

Tudge has been interested in biology his whole life, from boyhood trips to the beach collecting crustaceans in his native Australia, to his undergraduate and PhD work in zoology and biology at the University of Queensland. He has collected specimens all over the world, from Australia to Europe to North and South America.

Until now, he has never had a species named after him. He only found out about his namesake after reading an article about it in the journal Zootaxa. Apparently, finding out after-the-fact is standard practice in the highly formalized ritual of naming a new species.

The two crustacean taxonomists and authors of the paper who named the new crab after Tudge, Rafael Lemaitre of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History and Darryl L. Felder of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette's Department of Biology Laboratory for Crustacean Research, have known Tudge since he first came to Washington in 1995 as a postdoc research fellow at the Smithsonian.

Crustecean Elation

Lemaitre and Felder have been collecting specimens on the tiny Belizean island for decades and for more than 10 years, they had asked Tudge -- who specializes in the structures of crustacean reproduction and how they relate to the creatures' evolutionary history -- to join them on one of their semiannual research outings. Finally, in February 2010, Tudge joined them on a tiny island covered with hundreds of species of their favorite fauna.

It was crab heaven for a cast of crustacean guys.

"So you can take 40 steps off the island and you're on the edge of the reef, and then the back part of the reef is what they call the lagoon," Tudge recalled. "You slowly walk out into ever-increasing depths of water and it's a mixture of sand and sea grass and bits of coral, and then there's some channels. There's lots of different habitats there. Some islands are covered by mangroves. So we would visit all the different habitats that were there."

"We would collect on the reef crest, go and turn over coral boulders on the reef flat, snorkel over the sea grass beds. We pumped sand and mud to get things out of the ground. We walked into the mangroves and collected crustaceans from under the mangrove roots. We even snorkeled in the channels in the mangrove islands."

But discovering the new species was much less involved: Tudge turned over a coral boulder in an intertidal area, saw 50 or so tiny crabs scrambling around, and stuck a dozen or so specimens in a bottle before going on with his work. Only later in the lab, under the microscope, was it determined that this isolated little group of hermit crabs might be unique.

As the journal authors write: "Given this cryptic habitat and the relatively minute size of the specimens (shield length range = 1.0-3.0 mm), it is not surprising that these populations have gone unnoticed during extensive sampling programs that have previously taken place along the Barrier Reef of Belize."

Getting the Word

Tudge found out only recently found out that Areopaguristes tudgei -- a tiny hermit crab differentiated from others in its genus by such characteristics as the hairs growing on some of its appendages -- was joining the list of about 3 million known species. Lemaitre emailed him a PDF of the finished article. A note said only, "Here's a new species. What do you think?" The note had a smiley emoticon.

That's the way it works, said Tudge's colleague American University's College of Arts and Sciences, biology professor Daniel Fong. There's no warning; one day you just find out. Fong has also had species named after him, and he has discovered new ones as well.

"You go through several emotions when a species has been named after you," Fong said. "It is truly an honor, in the most formal sense of the term, that your colleagues have thought of naming a species after you. It is a very special type of recognition of your contribution to your research field by your colleagues."

Amid their exhaustive taxonomic description, complete with drawings and photographs of Areopaguristes tudgei, the journal article authors explain why they chose its name: "This species is named after our colleague Christopher C. Tudge (American University) who first noticed and collected populations of this diminutive hermit crab living under large dead coral boulders during joint field work in Carrie Bow Cay. The name also acknowledges his unique contributions to knowledge of the reproductive biology of hermit crabs."

Egypt's Morsi insists he won't be another dictator

As Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said he took the power of the courts to impose stability, protesters argued he is becoming a dictator. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

By NBC News staff

Responding to violent protests over the last four days, Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi insisted that he assumed control of the judiciary to stabilize the country ? not to concentrate power.

Protesters say that Morsi, who became the country?s first democratically-elected president on June 30, issued a decree of near-total executive power to elevate himself to Pharaoh-like status. They also worry that Morsi and his supporters will draft a constitution that will put Egypt on track to becoming like religiously conservative Iran or Turkey.

Morsi?s supporters say his control of the courts is temporary ? a necessary move, they say, because the courts are governed by former President Hosni Mubarak appointees who have blocked the country's transition to democracy.

According to the BBC, a statement by the presidency emphasized that Morsi's measures were implemented to avoid ?attempts to undermine democratically elected bodies and preserve the impartiality of the judiciary."

Egyptian Presidency / AP

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi speaks to supporters outside the presidential palace in Cairo. As judges strike against the president for assuming control of the judiciary, protesters say that Morsi is trying to grab power. Morsi insists he's trying to ease the country's transition to democracy.

Regardless of Morsi?s intent, the fallout has been acute. Six of his aides resigned Sunday, and stock markets plunged by 10 percent in Egypt. Youth protesters attacked the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party ? with which Morsi is affiliated ? killing one and wounding 60. Fights have even broken out between journalists covering the escalating tension.

The BBC?s Jon Leyne wrote that Morsi?s actions ? whether na?ve or over-confident ? could result in sectarian struggle. Morsi issued his decree on Thursday, the day after he was lauded by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for helping to negotiate a truce between the Palestinians and Israel.

In Cairo?s Tahrir Square, NBC?s Jim Maceda reported that Egyptians are understandably nervous, given their political history. Mubarak maintained military rule for three decades before he was overthrown during the Arab Spring revolution in February 2011.

That sentiment was reflected in a statement by the liberal Constitution party, according to the Guardian: "We are facing a historic moment in which we either complete our revolution or we abandon it to become prey for a group that has put its narrow party interests above the national interest."

Morsi says he is committed to finding ?common ground? with other political parties, and he plans to meet with senior judges on Monday to work toward a compromise, the BBC reported. Meanwhile, both sides have called for mass protests in Cairo on Tuesday.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland weighed in on Friday, Al Jazeera reported, saying that Morsi?s declarations ?raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community.?

"One of the aspirations of the revolution was to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution," Nuland said.

NBC's Isolde Raftery contributed to this report.
