ViewSonic gTablet Review | 2011 Shopping Products & Review

Awesome little toy. Highly Recommended, but with a caveat, NOT for anyone who is afraid to dig in a little bit and customize it. I would say this tablet is like a PC, not going to be what you want when you open it up, but has the potential to be everything you want with a little work. I?m running the gtabcomb beta on mine, and loving it. mods are easy if you follow the many guides available online, and the developer community is very helpful if you get stuck. I?m a tech dabbler at best, and found the modding process to be very simple. The tablet itself has great hardware, expandable memory, and a very nice looking screen. My only complaint is the HDMI output is via a proprietary dock slot, and Viewsonic has yet to make the dock available domestically. Otherwise, A+ for this thing. But again, its not for the un-adventurous, not for someone who wants to be handed a device and told it has everything they need, and they can never make it different from anyone else?s. So not for Apple people. I was a little skeptical at first after some of the reviews were critical of the out of box device. I bought it through Amazon ? Woot in July 2011. I have had it for several weeks. It is real simple to use and the battery life is great. I get 9-11 hours continuous surfing. It has a nice feel to it (feels solid) and very responsive (if you use the home screen not their interface). I do wish that there was some kind of depression for the home button, it would be easier to find when in the dark. I have found if you simply swipe your finger along the edge, it activates the home. For those that are afraid that the display is bad, I have not found it to be a problem. I keep it on my lap, and see the display just fine, without any adjusting. However, the side to side is much better than top & below viewing. So if you have someone sitting next to you, they wll see it just fin. If they are standing behind you, it will not work well. I have not rooted it, but probably will in the long run if Android market is not supported at some point. As much as you can find many of the apps, it is a pain without this convenience. I use the dolphin HD browser which works great. To get the version I wanted, I had to download it first on the android market to my phone and then transfer it over using Bluetooth file transfer. I have tethered it successfully to my Verizon smartphone using the beta version of PDANet tablet. I have found very few games and programs that would not work on the device. The Amazon android market is pretty good substitute.
The Viewsonic G is not slow as some described. If you have an Ipad, the performance is similar, but the price is one half. I have a 16G SDcard attached, making it a total of 32G of storage. The USB reads all my memory sticks and I play unconverted AVI videos flawlessly off of the USB without any chop. Enjoy!
