Fireworks could cause pets to run away | KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Everyone loves a good firework show on the Fourth of July holiday.

Except your pets.

The explosive sounds frighten some animals causing them to runaway, officials with Austin Animal Center said.

If your pet is missing, call

  • (512) 978-0500
  • After hours, call 311
  • Outside the Austin city limits, call (512) 974-2000

Center officials said they have seen drastic increases in intakes and missing animal calls the past seven days as animals try to escape the booming.

According to the center's data log, on Wednesday alone the total incoming of animals reached 41, which was only half of how many the shelter took in on Tuesday.

Officials said they are still expecting more animals to come because it takes a few days for the animals to make their way to the center.

The animal experts declared having proper identification for your pet is essential just in case they get away.

They advise anyone who loses an animal to dial the city?s information line at 311 for assistance.
