NEW ORLEANS -

Southern Baptist Convention has elected the Rev. Fred Luter Jr., its first African-American president.

Luter, of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in Gentilly, garnered international attention by becoming the first African-American elected vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The 68 million-member, predominately white Southern Baptist Convention was formed in 1845, when the issue of slavery caused a split in the church. Northern churches opposed slavery, while most Southern churches did not.

More than 45,000 churches belong to the organization.
