Paul Ryan Balances Storm Relief with Politics Just Seven Days Out

La Crosse, Wisc. - Paul Ryan cancelled three events in the battleground state of Colorado on Tuesday to thank volunteers in his home state of Wisconsin who were distributing goods for people affected by superstorm Sandy.

But that doesn't mean the campaign disappeared.

It's a tricky job the GOP vice presidential nominee has, of scrubbing official political events but still wanting to express empathy and not look overly political to the millions suffering from Sandy's wrath - and getting local coverage of the photo op critical to viewers in swing states who may still be making up their mind. (Mitt Romney, in Dayton, Ohio, today, faced the same delicate balance.)

At his first stop Tuesday, just hours after Sandy slammed into the Eastern seaboard leaving billions of dollars in destruction and at least 35 people dead, according to the Associated Press, Ryan thanked volunteers who were waving Romney/Ryan signs and gathering canned goods, water and other non-perishable items to be driven to New Jersey.

Along with wife Janna and brother Tobin, he shook hands and said, "This is what Americans do."

"We've got a lot of our fellow Americans in the Northeast who are hurting right now," Ryan said. "Let's keep the people who are suffering in our thoughts and prayers."

Ryan noted that Romney has spoken to "governors in the area." A Romney spokesperson said yesterday that the GOP presidential nominee had been in contact with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. Both are Republicans and surrogates on the trail, although this morning Christie poured praise on the president, saying he had done an "outstanding" job during Sandy.

Dressed in his red North Face jacket, Ryan asked volunteers not to "forget about the Red Cross? They need donations. If you have the ability to give blood, that's something else they need as well. So we just want to come and thank you for what they do in the victory center every day."

A Ryan aide told reporters the Wisconsin congressman had donated to Red Cross at some point last night or today.

In signs of how politics still raised its head today, Ryan was joined by Wisconsin senate candidate and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson as well as Wisconsin native Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus. And the Romney campaign sent out a press releasing announcing Ryan's arrival at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, a 30-minute drive from the vice presidential candidate's second stop of the day in Hudson, Wis. The brief walk off the plane from Ryan will be on local news channels in Minnesota, a state ABC News just moved Monday from "safe" for the president to "lean Obama."

Minneapolis today also witnessed an appearance by Obama's explainer-in-chief, former president Bill Clinton, who made a strong case for Obama's re-election in an address met by loud cheers at the University of Minnesota. It was a sign that the state is more in play than it's been.

Both campaigns are advertising there. As of last Friday, the Obama campaign had placed a $511,000 television ad buy on broadcast stations in Minneapolis for 12 days - Oct. 27 through Nov. 6 - according to a source tracking spending on the airwaves. The Romney campaign also went up on the air in the Minneapolis-St. Paul media market, reserving time from last Saturday through Tuesday. Ad tracking sources say that buy was small - $30,000 - and marked the first time Romney has placed ads in Minnesota during the general election.

At the event, Ryan was also asked about his House-passed budget proposal, which suggested $11 billion for "Community and Regional Development," a government function that includes FEMA and disaster relief. The president's was $19 billion. It's not possible to say exactly how much of those cuts would be directed at FEMA since the budget proposal is a broad outline, but when asked about it at the LaCrosse campaign office, Ryan didn't answer, ignoring the question.

Ryan's spokesperson Michael Steel said, "There are no FEMA cuts in the House-passed budget.

"And if you are comparing this to the president's budget, I would note it got zero votes in the House or Senate," Steel said.

Steel would not comment on Romney's statement at a 2011 debate, in which Romney said he'd like to see more of the responsibility of relief efforts put to the states rather than the federal government, something Romney himself also wouldn't comment on at a similar event in Ohio on Tuesday.

Another Ryan spokesperson, Brendan Buck, said Ryan does support federal assistance for disasters and called the issue nothing more than politics.

"Paul Ryan believes providing aid to victims of natural disasters is a critical obligation and should be treated as a high priority within a fiscally responsible budget," Buck said. "It's sad that some see these heartbreaking events as opportunities to distort his record and play politics. A Romney-Ryan administration will always ensure that disaster funding is there for those in need. Period."

Ryan returns to true campaigning tomorrow with a three-stop tour of Wisconsin on Wednesday. He will end the day in his hometown of Janesville to spend Halloween trick or treating with his three young children.

ABC News' Michael Falcone and Zach Wolf contributed reporting.

Advice For Those Consumers Contemplating A Bankruptcy Filing ...

TIP! Although it may be difficult to get financing after filing for bankruptcy, it will not be impossible by any means. This is true, but filing for bankruptcy gives you the opportunity to eventually build your credit score again.

There are few people who expect to file bankruptcy. Life can change in an instant, which can cause bankruptcy to be your only choice. Therefore, knowing how you can deal with this is vital. If you discover that you are faced with bankruptcy, you can help yourself with the knowledge provided below.

TIP! Make sure you are aware of your attorney?s actions when you are going through bankruptcy. It is important to know the status of your case and you should not be hesitant to ask questions.

If you are meeting with a lawyer to discuss bankruptcy, the initial consultation should be free so ask every question you have. Most lawyers will meet with you for free and give you helpful advice, so meet with several. Do not make any final decisions until every question you have has been answered. You do not have to give them your decision right after the consultation. Take your time, and schedule consultations with more than one lawyer.

TIP! You may not want to delay your bankruptcy if you secure a higher-paying job just prior to filing. It may still be a good idea to go ahead with the bankruptcy.

Before petitioning, you need to know what the personal bankruptcy rules are first. There are several pitfalls with personal bankruptcy that can make your case harder to handle. If the regulations are not followed, your case may be subject to a dismissal order. Before you go ahead, devote a little time to research and the topic of personal bankruptcy. This will make the bankruptcy process much simpler.

TIP! Check to make sure all the information in your bankruptcy paperwork is accurate. Even though you may have an attorney to fill out and file paperwork, it is your responsibility to ensure all information is accurate.

After a bankruptcy, you may still see problems getting any kind of unsecured credit. Since it is important that you work to rebuild your credit, you should instead think about applying for a secured card. This will prove that you want to improve your credit score. After a time, you are going to be able to have unsecured credit cards too.

TIP! Being with the people who you love should be still be a top priority. Undergoing bankruptcy can be a difficult experience.

Remember to spend some quality time with your loved ones. The process of bankruptcy can prove particularly brutal. It is extremely stressful and long, and it can leave you feeling ashamed of yourself. It can be hard to face the world while the bankruptcy process is taking place. However, self imposed isolation will only make you feel even worse about the process and could even lead to depression. Make it a point to catch yourself if you feel yourself pulling away from others. Tell others that you would like to do some enjoyable things together while you go through bankruptcy process, then do it.

TIP! If you are thinking of filing for personal bankruptcy, it is important to understand what led you to your current situation. Some people?s personal bankruptcy is caused by sudden emergency medical bills.

Do not use the word ?shame?, if you go bankrupt. Often, with bankruptcy, come feelings of guilt, shame and worthlessness. These feelings can cause you to make rash decisions and cause psychological problems. If you are filing for bankruptcy and you are thinking negatively about the situation, make an effort to stop that now.

TIP! You must be entirely candid when it comes to declaring assets and obligations in your bankruptcy petition. The person you choose to file with needs to know both the good and bad aspects of your finances.

Since it is possible to obtain a free consultation from the majority of bankruptcy lawyers, meet with a few of them prior to choosing one. Ensure that your meeting is actually with the attorney, not with a paralegal or an assistant. People in these positions are unable to offer legal advice. By shopping lawyers, you will be more likely to find one that makes you comfortable about the process.

TIP! File at exactly the right time to maximize the effect of your bankruptcy. In bankruptcy filing, timing is quite important.

When you file for bankruptcy, you should be very aware of your rights. You might hear from your creditors that your debts cannot be canceled through bankruptcy. There are only three main classes of debts that are non-dischargable: taxes, child support and student loans. If a debt collector tells you this false information, seek the advice of your bankruptcy attorney. You may also want to report the bill collector to the attorney general?s office.

TIP! The most important tip a person filing for personal bankruptcy can remember and follow is to be completely transparent in all dealings. Withholding or lying about certain information can seriously worsen your financial situation.

If you have decided that your only option is filing for personal bankruptcy, you?ll want to know exactly the right steps to take to proceed . The process will be a lot easier if you have the right information. This article has given you a lot of information that will help you succeed during the filing process and beyond

Great Tips For Using Internet Promotion To Benefit You | Make ...

Great Tips For Using Internet Promotion To Benefit You

A strong web presence can be a very valuable strategy for any business, and effective Affiliate marketing will spread the word about your product or service. It may seem easy at first, but you have to become educated on the topic of web marketing in order to succeed at it. Here are some suggestions to follow, and before you know it, you will be an expert.

Consider adding a game to your website in order to draw more visitors. Customers love to play free games online, and that can keep people coming back for more after they play once. You can use your game to subtly market your products or services. If you sell some sort of hair product, you can include that in a game to get people thinking about your products.

You should ensure that your business website?s URL is a simple one. If you can arrange it, use your business name as a website name. Customers can use Google to find your site, of course, but make it even simpler with an easy to remember address they can type into the URL field.

Great content is the basis of a strong, effective Affiliate marketing strategy. Always make sure your content is updated and correct before sending it to customers. In addition, make sure that someone looks over your content. A fresh perspective is extremely valuable. Finally, always run a thorough grammar and spelling check before you publish your content to catch any typos or mistakes.

Make up goals for your website and do everything you can to stick with them. Figure out which kind of articles you want to write and for which article directory. Make sure this content is adapted to your audience, and encourage people to share these articles with their friends. In order to make the most of your efforts, keep the directory?s guidelines firmly in mind when you write.

A good web marketing tip is to be aware of your competition. Look at your competitors? sites to get a better idea of how they are marketing their products or services. Your goal is to create a better site that people will check instead of your competitors?.

A successful Internet angle to follow would be to make offers to your customers for added discounts if they happen to spend over a stated amount of money. An example of this would be to offer them 10 percent off orders of $200 or more. Incentives like this will ensure customer loyalty and keep them coming back.

If you make any sort of claim in your ads, you must also ensure that you can support it with hard evidence. Lots of people are skeptical of what they read. If you include testimonials, studies, guarantees or references, you will seem much more credible and are more likely to get a sale. Statements without evidence to back them up will not cause people to take your product seriously.

Do not use the same tactics or content as others if you wish to use Online marketing well. The search engines have gotten much better at identifying duplicate content, and even if you find that copying from others works for a little while, it can be devastating in the long run. Try to be innovative.

Add content in the form of a blog or forum to prevent your website from becoming boring or irrelevant. To rank high with search engines, you need fresh content. A blog is a very effective tool for adding fresh, relevant content.

Include a chat feature on your site so that visitors can meet each other there. This will make people feel like they are part of a group, not just a customer. People are naturally drawn to others with shared interests, which makes them highly likely to bond and connect with your business.

If your site sells products, having security is important. There are a lot of impartial, reputable services. McAffee, VeriSign, etc. will safeguard the financial exposure of both vendor and customer. Online security is very important and it?s not free. However, it can help you avoid a myriad of problems, so do your research and make sure your financial transactions are protected.

There has to be something on your site that visitors can?t find anywhere else. Advertise it heavily to attract customers to your site. They may stay to look at other products you offer.

These days, people are very leery of advertising. That?s due to years of ads being misleading. As a consequence, you must provide proof for what you state on your site. Use commentaries, reviews, testimonials, and research to back you up. This helps back up your reputation and can get people to trust you. You should always respect your customers? intelligence and common sense. Don?t take advantage of your potential or current customers. Your reputation in the years ahead will reflect how you treat your customers, and those that are well-treated will continue to return constantly.

Create a list of FAQs about your product. Take the time to develop questions that allow for answers full of product suggestions. Write your questions with this in mind, giving yourself the subtle opportunity to promote your wares.

The way your site looks is just as big a deal as it would be if your customers were in your physical store. Always perform regular site maintenance to make sure the site is up and running smoothly. Consider the fact that your customers can?t enter your store if the doors are locked; if your site has bugs that prevent customers from shopping, they won?t stick around too long.

Include a choice of several specials on the order check-out page. Perhaps you would offer a choice of one half-priced product, from a selection of three or four, to say thank you for the business. This is an excellent method of getting rid of surplus inventory and stimulating sales. At the same time, the customer feels as if he or she is getting a deal.

Website marketing will bring your products to the public eye. The only way to have Website marketing success is by knowing exactly how to go about it. This article is designed to provide you with the information you need for success in your Web marketing ventures.

Egyptians in hajj divided over Islam in politics

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Now that she has finished the hajj and is returning home to Egypt, Magda Bagnied says her family will no doubt try to convince her to put on the headscarf to demonstrate her religiosity after a pilgrimage meant to cleanse her of sin and bring her closer to God.

She fully expects that from her parents. But she doesn't want that kind of pressure from her government or leaders.

"Leave religion to the people," said Bagnied, a media professor at Ahram Canadian University, in Cairo's suburbs.

The annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest sites offers Muslims a chance to reaffirm their faith and root themselves more firmly in their beliefs. It comes at a time when several Arab nations are facing a similar issue on a political level after uprisings that toppled longtime leaders and brought Islamists to greater power: The question of how much a government should be rooted in Islam.

Egypt in particular is struggling with that question. Elections since the fall last year of Hosni Mubarak elevated Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, to president. The Brotherhood was vaulted to become the country's strongest political force, along with even more conservative Islamists known as Salafis, who follow a strict Saudi-style interpretation of Islam.

As pilgrims were making their way around the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure in Mecca that observant Muslims pray toward five times a day, and performing an elaborate set of rituals in Saudi Arabia over the past week, Egypt was in a bitter struggle over the writing of the new constitution.

Salafis are pressing for the document to explicitly root Egypt's laws in Shariah. That has raised liberals' fears that it will bring stricter implementation of Islamic law and empower Muslim clerics in a political role, limiting women's rights and freedoms of worship and expression. The assembly writing the constitution is dominated by the Brotherhood and Salafis.

The Egyptians who performed the pilgrimage this year may be united in the importance they give to their faith in their lives. But it doesn't mean they all agree on the mix of religion and politics. More than 90,000 Egyptians were on the pilgrimage, which largely wrapped up on Monday. They hailed from all segments of Egyptian society, the rich and the poor, and from all corners of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Wearing the seamless terrycloth garments worn by male pilgrims to symbolize equality and unity during hajj, Sayid Zeid said Egypt's constitution should represent all Egyptians ? and, he added, it must be based on the Quran.

How can it be both, given the large Christian minority and the sector of liberal Muslims?

"Shariah will be applied by God ... It should be applied as it came down from God," said Zeid, who is a reporter with Egypt's state TV, though he was performing the hajj, not covering it.

For some, it seemed only natural that Islamic law would benefit a Muslim-majority nation, putting aside questions of who would interpret it or implement it.

Making his way to midday prayers at Mecca's Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba, Abdel-Muntalib el-Fikky said there is no reason to fear Shariah or the Islamists.

"Why are we all here? We are all here for God," he said of the pilgrims. "Our constitution, God willing, will be good. It will move us forward."

Anwar Saad, a 32 year-old teacher from Egypt's Beheira province, stood on Jabal al-Rahma in Mount Arafat, in the desert outside Mecca during a rite of prayer on Thursday that many feel is the pinnacle moment of hajj.

"The Brotherhood have moderate views. They are not conservative like the Salafis. We hope they will apply a moderate form of Shariah for Egypt," he said. "We want God to help Morsi succeed ... There were 30 years of corruption and this will not be fixed in 100 days. Be patient with the president."

Notably, hajj itself shows the variety in interpretations of Islamic rules. For example, in most of the Muslim world, men and women are segregated during prayers. But in the Grand Mosque, the two sexes pray side by side. For most of the hajj rites, women are not allowed to wear the veil that covers the entire face, even though ultraconservative Muslims insist a woman's face should be hidden from males not related to her.

Bagnied, the media professor, said she does not fear Shariah but those who would try to interpret and apply it.

"What kind of Islam do they want to apply? Afghanistan, Iran or Saudi Arabia?" she said. Bagnied, who does not wear the headscarf that many Egyptian Muslim women don to cover their hair, said she can resist her family's urging her to start wearing it. But she worries that an Islamist government will start to apply political pressure as well on such personal choices.

She said many people voted for Morsi hoping that because he is a pious Muslim and will apply "God's law" that their lives will improve.

"I think many Egyptians don't know the content of the constitution," she said. "Egypt is full of people talking about politics, but there is a large amount of ignorance in the country and you can convince people (by using Islam) that they have to obey their leaders, who are sheiks and politicians."

Ihab Abdel-Aal, 47, is among those who voted for the former Mubarak regime-era official who ran against Morsi in the past summer's presidential race. Morsi won by just over half the vote. Abdel-Aal has performed the hajj more than 25 times, since he's a tour operator bringing other Egyptians on the pilgrimage.

He fears Egypt is turning to a theocracy.

"Democracy and freedom are new to Egypt," he said. "There should be no religion in politics and no politics in religion."

Abdel-Aal, like many who work in Egypt's vital tourism industry that was hard-hit due to political turmoil over the past year, said he believes Shariah cannot be applied in all aspects of life.

"This will tank the economy and other sectors and just won't work."

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, who runs a Cairo tourism company, says he has performed hajj more than 30 times. He said the number of Egyptians wanting to perform hajj and umrah, the smaller pilgrimage to Mecca, increased this year.

"In any crisis, the first thing a person does is pray to God," he said. "We are in a crisis."

Exoskeleton of advanced design promises new degree of independence for people with paraplegia

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The dream of regaining the ability to stand up and walk has come closer to reality for people paralyzed below the waist who thought they would never take another step.

A team of engineers at Vanderbilt University's Center for Intelligent Mechatronics has developed a powered exoskeleton that enables people with severe spinal cord injuries to stand, walk, sit and climb stairs. Its light weight, compact size and modular design promise to provide users with an unprecedented degree of independence.

The university has several patents pending on the design and Parker Hannifin Corporation -- a global leader in motion and control technologies -- has signed an exclusive licensing agreement to develop a commercial version of the device, which it plans on introducing in 2014.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, somewhere between 236,000 to 327,000 people in the U.S. are living with serious spinal cord injuries. About 155,000 have paraplegia. The average age at injury is 41 and the estimated lifetime cost when it happens to a person of 50 ranges from $1.1 million to $2.5 million.

Until recently "wearable robots" were the stuff of science fiction. In the last 10 years, however, advances in robotics, microelectronics, battery and electric motor technologies advanced to the point where it has become practical to develop exoskeletons to aid people with disabilities. In fact, two companies -- Argo Medical Technologies Ltd. in Israel and Ekso Bionics in Berkeley, Calif. -- have developed products of this type and are marketing them in the U.S.

These devices act like an external skeleton. They strap in tightly around the torso. Rigid supports are strapped to the legs and extend from the hip to the knee and from the knee to the foot. The hip and knee joints are driven by computer-controlled electric motors powered by advanced batteries. Patients use the powered apparatus with walkers or forearm crutches to maintain their balance.

"You can think of our exoskeleton as a Segway with legs," said Michael Goldfarb, the H. Fort Flowers Chair in Mechanical Engineering and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. "If the person wearing it leans forward, he moves forward. If he leans back and holds that position for a few seconds, he sits down. When he is sitting down, if he leans forward and holds that position for a few seconds, then he stands up."

Goldfarb developed the system with funding from the National Institutes of Health and with the assistance of research engineer Don Truex, graduate students Hugo Quintero, Spencer Murray and Kevin Ha, and Ryan Farris, a former student who now works for Parker Hannifin.

"My kids have started calling me 'Ironman,'" said Brian Shaffer, who was completely paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident on Christmas night 2010. He has been testing the Vanderbilt apparatus at the Nashville-area satellite facility of the Shepherd Center. Based in Atlanta, Shepherd Center is one the leading hospitals for spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation in the U.S. and has provided the Vanderbilt engineers with the clinical feedback they need to develop the device.

"It's unbelievable to stand up again. It takes concentration to use it at first but, once you catch on, it's not that hard: The device does all the work. I don't expect that it will completely replace the wheelchair, but there are some situations, like walking your daughter down the aisle at her wedding or sitting in the bleachers watching your son play football, where it will be priceless," said Shaffer, who has two sons and two daughters.

"This is an extremely exciting new technology," said Clare Hartigan, a physical therapist at Shepherd Center who has worked with the Argo, Ekso and Vanderbilt devices. "All three models get people up and walking, which is fantastic."

According to Hartigan, just getting people out of their wheelchairs and getting their bodies upright regularly can pay major health dividends. People who must rely on a wheelchair to move around can develop serious problems with their urinary, respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive systems, as well as getting osteoporosis, pressure sores, blood clots and other afflictions associated with lack of mobility. The risk for developing these conditions can be reduced considerably by regularly standing, moving and exercising their lower limbs.

The Vanderbilt design has some unique characteristics that have led Hartigan and her colleagues at Shepherd Center to conclude that it has the most promise as a rehabilitative and home device.

None of the exoskeletons have been approved yet for home use. But the Vanderbilt design has some intrinsic advantages. It has a modular design and is lighter and slimmer than the competition. As a result, it can provide its users with an unprecedented degree of independence. Users will be able to transport the compact device on the back of their wheelchair. When they reach a location where they want to walk, they will be able to put on the exoskeleton by themselves without getting out of the wheelchair. When they are done walking, they can sit back down in the same chair and take the device off or keep it on and propel the wheelchair to their next destination.

The Vanderbilt exoskeleton weighs about 27 pounds, nearly half the weight of the other models that weigh around 45 pounds. The other models are also bulkier so most users wearing them cannot fit into a standard-sized wheelchair.

From a rehabilitation perspective the Vanderbilt design also has two potential advantages, Hartigan pointed out:

? The amount of robotic assistance adjusts automatically for users who have some muscle control in their legs. This allows them to use their own muscles while walking. When a user is totally paralyzed, the device does all the work. The other designs provide all the power all of the time.

? It is the only wearable robot that incorporates a proven rehabilitation technology called functional electrical stimulation. FES applies small electrical pulses to paralyzed muscles, causing them to contract and relax. FES can improve strength in the legs of people with incomplete paraplegia. For complete paraplegics, FES can improve circulation, change bone density and reduce muscle atrophy.

There is also the matter of cost. The price tags of other rehabilitation model exoskeletons have been reported to be as high as $140,000 apiece, plus a hefty annual service fee. Parker Hannifin hasn't set a price for the Vanderbilt exoskeleton, but Goldfarb is hopeful that its minimalist design combined with Parker Hannifin's manufacturing capability will translate into a more affordable product. "It would be wonderful if we could get the price down to a level where individuals could afford them and insurance companies would cover them," he said.

Meanwhile, Hartigan has advice for potential users: "These new devices for walking are here and they are getting better and better. However, a person has to be physically fit to use them. They have to keep their weight below 220 pounds, develop adequate upper body strength to use a walker or forearm crutches and maintain flexibility in their shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints ... which is not that easy when a person has relied on a wheelchair for months or even years."

The research was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development numbered R01HD059832.

(AP) ? Verizon Wireless, the largest cellphone carrier in the U.S., on Monday said that it will sell a Nokia phone for the first time in years, lending support to the embattled Finnish company's turnaround effort.

Verizon says it will sell the Lumia 822, an exclusive model that's part of Nokia's lineup of smartphones based on Microsoft's Windows software, for $100 with a two-year contract. It will be in stores by Thanksgiving.

Verizon rivals AT&T and T-Mobile USA started selling Lumia phones earlier this year, and will join Verizon in launching new phones with Windows Phone 8, an updated operating system. Microsoft held a launch event for Windows Phone 8 in San Francisco on Monday, but the first phones are some weeks away from U.S. store shelves.

Even though it was, until recently, the world's largest maker of phones, Nokia has been largely absent from the U.S. market for many years. Its early smartphones never caught on in the country, and it was virtually shut out once the iPhone launched in 2007.

In addition to Nokia, Verizon will be selling Windows Phones from Samsung Electronics and HTC.

Toronto Skyline Holds Hazards for Migratory Birds

TORONTO ? In the shadow of the massive black towers of a bank?s downtown headquarters here was an almost indistinguishable puff of dark gray fluff on the sidewalk.

It was the body of a golden-crowned kinglet, an unlucky one, that had crashed into the iconic Toronto-Dominion Center building somewhere above.

There is no precise ranking of the world?s most deadly cities for migratory birds, but Toronto is considered a top contender for the title. When a British nature documentary crew wanted to film birds killed by crashes into glass, Daniel Klem Jr., an ornithologist at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., who has been studying the issue for about 40 years, directed them here, where huge numbers of birds streaking through the skies one moment can be plummeting toward the concrete the next.

?They?re getting killed everywhere and anywhere where there?s even the smallest garage window,? Professor Klem said. ?In the case of Toronto, perhaps because of the number of buildings and the number of birds, it?s more dramatic.?

So many birds hit the glass towers of Canada?s most populous city that volunteers scour the ground of the financial district for them in the predawn darkness each morning. They carry paper bags and butterfly nets to rescue injured birds from the impending stampede of pedestrian feet or, all too often, to pick up the bodies of dead ones.

The group behind the bird patrol, the Fatal Light Awareness Program, known as FLAP, estimates that one million to nine million birds die every year from impact with buildings in the Toronto area. The group?s founder once single-handedly recovered about 500 dead birds in one morning.

Toronto?s modern skyline began to rise in the 1960s, giving it a high proportion of modern, glass-clad structures, forming a long wall along the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. That barrier crosses several major migratory flight paths, the first large structures birds would encounter coming south from the northern wilderness.

Though those factors make Toronto?s buildings particularly lethal, Professor Klem was quick to say that the city also leads North America when it comes to addressing the problem.

After years of conducting rescue and recovery missions and prodding the city to include bird safety in its design code for new buildings, FLAP has recently begun using the courts to help keep birds alive. It is participating in two legal cases using laws normally meant to protect migratory birds from hunting and industrial hazards to prosecute the owners of two particularly problematic buildings.

Briskly walking on a recent morning with a volunteer bird patrol, Michael Mesure, who founded FLAP 19 years ago, pointed out many examples of killer buildings. As he neared one particularly troublesome spot, on the eastern edge of the financial district, he pointed to a gaggle of sea gulls sitting in trees across the street from an office building. They were waiting, he said, to dine on the smaller birds maimed or killed by the building.

The building has a glass facade that disorients birds by reflecting the surrounding trees. Perceiving the reflection as habitat, birds zoom at it full throttle without regard for the danger.

The victims are largely songbirds. Perhaps because of familiarity, the urbanites of the bird world, like house sparrows, pigeons and gulls, are much less prone to crashing into glass, Professor Klem said.

All the birds collected by FLAP, dead or alive, go into paper bags. Though there were no survivors that recent morning, the merely stunned or frightened would have been released in a park near the shore of Lake Ontario. The injured would have been taken to one of two animal rehabilitation centers outside the city.

The dead birds, with the location of their deaths marked on their bags, first end up in a freezer at FLAP?s headquarters, which is part of a sympathetic city councilor?s offices. Although the autumn migration was barely under way, the freezer was already close to full. Its contents ranged from owls to hummingbirds, and the vividness of their plumage was generally offset by the gruesomeness of their smashed heads.

?If the people were colliding with buildings at the same rate birds are, this issue would have been dealt with a long time ago,? Mr. Mesure said. ?There?s a detachment in society about this.?

One especially effective, if unpopular, method of reducing the threat to birds, Mr. Mesure said, is simply to cover the outside of windows up to the height of adjacent trees with the finely perforated plastic film often used to turn transit buses into rolling billboards. The film can be printed with advertising or decorative patterns, although the group has found that a repetitive pattern of small circles made from the same adhesive plastic is both effective and less likely to prompt aesthetic objections.

For new buildings, the solution can be as simple as etching patterns into its glass. A German glass company is also developing windows that it hopes can take advantage of the ability of birds to see ultraviolet light, by including warning patterns that are invisible to humans.

Obama: Not Such a Nice Guy When It Comes to Romney

If President Obama is trying to widen his advantage with women voters or improve his likability numbers, Thursday may not have been the best day he?s had recently. Even in a campaign year noted for its less-than-uplifting tone, this was a low point. The president was caught at his earthiest when he casually referred to Mitt Romney as a ?bullshitter? in an interview while keeping up his attack on his Republican challenger as a man stricken with ?Romnesia,? a disease that prevents him from remembering his past positions.

The Romney campaign publicly welcomed the president?s more aggressive and combative tone, hoping it might help them further narrow the gender gap and prevent Obama from crossing the 50 percent threshold in job approval. Though still struggling to overtake Obama in most of the key battleground states, the Romney braintrust insists that the front page of Thursday?s Des Moines Register captured a new campaign dynamic. The page carried twin campaign stories with dueling headlines: ?Obama Sharpens Criticism? vs. ?Romney Expresses Optimism.?

?The contrast between President Obama?s desperation and Governor Romney?s optimism couldn?t be more clear,? declared Romney aide Amanda Henneberg, making sure the newspaper stories got wide distribution.

Less broadly distributed but more jarring was the snippet from the president?s interview with historian Douglas Brinkley for Rolling Stone. After a light exchange with the 6-year-old daughter of a Rolling Stone editor, Obama was described as grinning and responded to the child?s encouragement, saying, "You know, kids have good instincts.... They look at the other guy and say, 'Well, that?s a bullshitter, I can tell.' "

Brinkley told CBS News that he sees the word as basically a continuation of the Democratic attack on Romney. ?It's another part of Romnesia, I suppose. The working man's Romnesia is BS-er.? White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer urged reporters not to be ?distracted by the word? but to focus instead on the importance of choosing a president they can trust.

That is the question at the heart of the ?Romnesia? assault. But Boston is hoping many voters -- particularly women -- will pause at least for a while on the president?s choice of words. Aide Kevin Madden told CNN that it shows the president is ?rattled and on the defensive. He?s running on empty and has nothing left but attacks and insults.?

A senior Romney strategist who asked not to be named said they expected more attacks from Obama. ?The Chicago guys know that he is below 50 on both ballot and approval,? he told National Journal. ?It is not that Obama likes to be a hatchet man. They think they have got to bring Romney back down by bringing his negatives back up.... But it is dangerous to have the president himself doing it.?

Madden called it ?unfortunate he has to close the final days of the campaign this way.? But that is how most campaigns end, with one candidate ratcheting up the attack rhetoric and the other one trying to stay above the fray. In past campaigns, the one mounting the assault is often the one who either feels the election is slipping away or who finds it impossible to accept that the challenger is making the race so close. Certainly, that was the case in 1992 when President George H.W. Bush let his frustration dictate some of his rhetoric in the final days of his battle against challengers Bill Clinton and Al Gore. ?My dog Millie knows more about foreign policy than these two bozos,? he complained. In the same set of speeches, Bush dismissed Gore as ?the Ozone man.? Bush aides immediately regretted the president?s comments, believing they eroded his stature lead over Clinton by appearing so ?unpresidential.?

Four years ago, Republican nominee John McCain suffered a similar diminution of gravitas when he spent so much of his final push parading around an unlicensed ?Joe the Plumber? while vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin accused Obama of ?palling around with terrorists.?

In part, this year?s tougher rhetoric sheds light on what was never a very well-kept secret -- Obama doesn?t like Romney. ?We could go through [history] and find good and bad relationships,? said historian Brinkley. ?This is not one that has a whole lot of mutual respect.? Obama all but confirmed that in an interview with NBC anchor Brian Williams. He said he suspects his personal feelings are similar to that of most presidential candidates in the heat of a campaign. ?I don?t think anybody would say that while you were in the middle of a campaign that you felt deep affection for the other guy, because, you know, look, you?re fighting for competing visions,? he said.

It also is true that the antipathy is nothing new in the 2012 campaign and has been in no way restricted to the president. Just on Thursday, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan called the president ?slick? and dismissed his second-term agenda as a ?comic book.? Romney himself has lashed out both at his Democratic opponent and at his Republican rivals in the primaries. After Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary, Romney and his allies unloaded on him in Florida, leaving the former speaker reeling.

And the attacks launched against Romney in the primaries were more biting than any joke by Obama about ?Romnesia.? Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Romney let companies ?loot people?s jobs, loot their pensions, loot their ability to take care of their families.? He said Romney and the companies he bought were ?vultures ... sitting out there on the tree limb waiting for the company to get sick and then they swoop in, they eat the carcass. They leave with that and they leave the skeleton.? And Rick Santorum at one point seemed to be likening Romney to Hitler.

All this is further proof of the correctness of humorist Finley Peter Dunne when he first observed that American ?politics ain?t beanbag.? And it is one of the reasons why the Obama campaign is unconcerned with suggestions they aren?t playing nice with Romney. ?If he can?t stand a little humor,? said campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher, ?how will he stand up to China? Or stand up for the American people??

Glanmire Phanter ? Performance Review - 2012

Glanmire Phanter is not a very consistent runner, but he has got a solid chance of making his team proud in the future, as he has got the tools to deliver positive results at the highest level against the best in the business.

Although, the young greyhound does not have a lot of experience, yet his performances in 2012 have clearly shown that he can take on anyone in the sport. He is learning the art of pressurising his opponents and will get better with the passage of time.

Speed is his strength, thus he likes running in shorter distance events. He has never been tested in a lengthy race, so there is a question mark over his stamina. At the moment, he is working really fine in his favourite format and will probably think of something else in the future.

The C. Lister?s trainee made his first appearance in March this year with a T3 event. The distance to cover for him back then was 435 metres and he did not really enjoy the conditions that time around.

Afterwards, he appeared in three back-to-back solo events over 245 metres and his team was confident that he had the speed to match his rivals in OR contests. However, his first outing in this class did not prove to be a very good one, as he suffered a humiliating defeat in it.

He was priced 6 to 1 back then and was up against some very good runners. He entered the event from trap number three, which meant that he had to deal with some crowd at the start. This was exactly what happened and he was put under immense pressure by his opponents.

The black dog was unable to trouble anyone and had to settle for fifth place in the end. It was probably too early to test him in this class, but he did not panic under pressure and gave some solid performances afterwards.

Killahan Phanter?s son kept on training hard in order to improve his performances and the results were positive for him. He has got a few OR victories now and seems to be confident enough to represent his team in some major events.

(AP) ? Marcus Lattimore spoke to his South Carolina teammates from the heart on Friday night as they prepared to face Tennessee.

Don't take anything for granted, Lattimore urged the Gamecocks.

"Act like every play is your last play," defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said, recalling the junior tailback's words.

Now, those players hope Lattimore hasn't played his last game after a horrific knee injury that will likely end his season prematurely for a second straight year.

Coach Steve Spurrier gave few details on Lattimore's damaged right leg, which flopped to the turf like a rag doll's might after a hit in the second quarter of No. 17 South Carolina's 38-35 win over Tennessee on Saturday.

Spurrier said the injury appeared every bit as serious as the torn knee ligaments which caused Lattimore to miss the final six games last season. He required surgery and about six months of rehabilitation to make it back.

Lattimore was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"He's going to do wonderful things," the coach said, while acknowledging, "I don't know what field of life."

Connor Shaw threw for three touchdowns and a career-high 356 yards. He also ran for another as the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak. Lattimore had a 28-yard touchdown run, extending his school marks to 41 TDs overall and 38 rushing.

The Vols (3-5, 0-5) nearly rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the final quarter. Tyler Bray drove Tennessee to the Gamecocks' 19 with 1:08 to go before defensive end Jadeveon Clowney forced a fumble to end the series. Tennessee forced a punt and got a final chance, but Victor Hampton intercepted Bray's long pass attempt to seal the win.

The Gamecocks rolled up 510 yards after managing only 368 combined the previous two weeks in losses at LSU and Florida. Tight end Justice Cunningham had six catches for 108 yards and receiver Bruce Ellington had six catches for 101 yards as South Carolina won its third straight over Tennessee for the first time ever in a series that began in 1903.

Bray passed for 368 yards and four touchdowns, three to Zach Rogers.

The Gamecocks hoped to get their offense back on track and Lattimore was a huge part of that plan. He had been slowed by a hip bruise sustained at LSU two weeks ago, limiting him to just three carries in a 44-11 loss at Florida last Saturday. But Spurrier said he was at 100 percent and ready to once again carry the load for South Carolina.

And Lattimore was doing just that, gaining 65 yards in the opening half, including a 28-yard burst for his 41st career touchdown at South Carolina. Everything stopped at Williams-Brice Stadium when Lattimore lay on the turf after a 2-yard pickup right before halftime.

Lattimore was wrapped up from behind by linebacker Herman Lathers as defensive back Eric Gordon came in at the knees. Lattimore's body whipped around, his right leg slamming against the ground.

Trainers immediately rushed out to South Carolina's star, holding him against the ground as he tried to lift up and see what was going on. Lattimore appeared to be sobbing in pain.

After several minutes, Tennessee players came out to wish Lattimore well. South Carolina's players, coaches and staff soon followed and the group surrounded Lattimore as trainers lifted him onto the cart. The crowd chanted Lattimore's name as the cart pulled away, Lattimore's head covered with a towel heading toward the locker room.

"I don't know that I've ever seen anything like that," Spurrier said.

Messages of support filled Twitter from the sports world, including U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach, LSU coach Les Miles and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Spurrier was not surprised, saying Lattimore was loved and admired by many because of his work ethic and attitude.

"As a person, there is none better that I've ever met," the coach said.

A season ago, the Gamecocks relied on veteran Kenny Miles and first-year player Brandon Wilds to make up for Lattimore's absence a year ago. Miles filled in for Lattimore in the second half against the Vols, but Wilds has not played this season because of injury.

Freshman Mike Davis has played sparingly in seven games and should also see more playing time without Lattimore.

South Carolina looked in control most of the half, scoring on three of its first four possessions. Shaw threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to Bruce Ellington and 26 yards to Rory Anderson before Lattimore's TD run.

Tennessee cut the lead to 21-14 on Bray's 37-yard scoring throw to Zach Rogers, the duo's second TD pass of the half. But Shaw ended a 10-play drive on a 1-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left before the half to restore the Gamecocks' two-touchdown lead.

Bray and the Vols nearly pulled off the comeback down the stretch when Rogers hauled in a 22-yard pass in the end zone to bring Tennessee within a field goal. But Clowney's sack and Hampton's late pick saved things for South Carolina.

It's the third straight season Tennessee has opened 0-5 in the SEC.

"It's the same old song and dance on the SEC level," Dooley said. "We had a chance to win and they made a great play, got the ball out and turned it over. All you can is move on."

Spurrier hopes to do that, too, and hopes he can have Lattimore in his backfield as he has the past three seasons.

"Maybe he'll be back next year," Spurrier said. "Maybe it won't be quite as severe as it appeared on the field out there."

Strategic Human Resources: Is It The Top HR Trend? | Green Key ...

Of all the developments and trends in human resources, what would make your list?

Would strategic HR be there? How about outsourcing; or should that be in-sourcing? Does employer branding and the ?war for talent? belong there? And where would technology fit in, especially the trend away from so-called best in class components and toward integrated systems?

Not an easy call is it? Just since the start of the recession in late 2007 human resource departments, and the profession itself, has seen a remarkable shift in both function and practice. Strategic HR, a concept that began to percolate about the same time companies changed the personnel division to the HR department, got jumped into the C-suite consciousness shortly after the layoffs began. It was helped along by the angst created earlier by Keith Hammond?s wake-up call to the profession, ?Why? We Hate HR.?

Call it a trend, call it a coincidence, but today, on LinkedIn, there are 4,000 HR vice presidents with MBAs. Coming up in the ranks are twice that many MBA-holding, HR directors. This is telling, suggesting Hammond?s observation that, ?Most human-resources managers aren?t particularly interested in, or equipped for, doing business? had an effect.

Merely having a business degree doesn?t necessarily make the holder a candidate for CEO, but it does prepare him or her to take a seat at the grown-ups table. And the evidence is there to officially say HR is getting that seat; LinkedIn lists 761 MBA-holding, HR vice presidents at the Fortune 1000.

Other trends? Certainly the growth of contract labor has to be on the list. Today, contingent labor comprises, on average, 16% of the workforce of companies with 1,000 or more workers. Seven years ago, it was 11%. That percentage is only going to continue to grow, with Fortune 100 companies leading the way.

More significantly, we?re not talking here about companies simply bringing in more seasonal help, the way retailers do at holiday time. This is a shift in the strategic mix of the corporate workforce, much as tech companies have done for years. Enabled by the availability through layoff or buyout or forced retirement of skilled professionals, companies have discovered they can tap this pool for specific projects without adding to corporate headcount.

The Harvard Business Review called this growing corps of professionals ?supertemps.? Many of them, having discovered the freedom of moving from challenge to challenge, have little interest in becoming permanent staff. Write the authors: ?as growing numbers of professionals decide that they prefer to work on a temporary basis, organizations are finding ways to work with them.?

Besides these, readers of the Human Resource IQ blog, weighed in on other developments that figure as trends: metrics and analytics; technology; outsourcing; comp and benefits; compliance; training, and; the mobile workforce. Several of these, and specifically the welcome focus on analytics, are part of HR?s growing strategic emphasis. As every MBA knows, ?if it?s not measured, it isn?t managed,? and you don?t know if it?s effective or not.

So, with the help of technology, today?s HR MBAs are linking performance to the bottom line, and back to talent acquisition and the management of the entire workforce. The HRIQ audience talks about the technology trend as automating HR?s rote processes. That?s certainly important, but it?s evolutionary, not revolutionary. What puts technology on the list is the integration of discrete HR systems ? the ATS, payroll, time management, performance, and the like ? into a single system that offers a ?big picture? view.

It?s not yet a complete integration; ERP software steps toward it, but few of those implementations were designed with HR as partner. HR systems got coupled on. As the C-suite grows in its appreciation of the economic value of its talent, ever more of these holistic integrations will occur, making the impact of the workforce on the bottom line clearer and more measurable.

The Society for Human Resource is working on an industry standard to provide companies a uniform, internationally accepted method of valuing a company?s human capital. The work of a group of dozens of professionals from academia, finance, HR and elsewhere, the standard will eventually be presented to the Amercian National Standards Institute.

Among the elements to be valued, according to the proposed standard, are: human capital spending; retention; engagement; and something the standard calls ?Human capital discussion & analysis.?

The objective of this latter element is ?to provide management with an opportunity to connect the dots and to provide investors with an enterprise-wide perspective of the meaning and importance of the various human capital metrics.? Connecting those dots will demand a sharper focus on the economic contribution ? and not just the cost ? of the workforce. Inevitably, that will mean more emphasis on enterprise-wide linkage of HR?s information, with the rest of the operation.

In other words, as Haig R. Nalbantian, senior partner at Mercer, told the HRIQ audience, ?developing one?s own data to ascertain the impact of policies and practices is becoming more the norm. This is a major change and is aligned with developments in other fields like Finance, Marketing, Logistics, etc. that are pushing the boundaries and tapping the benefits of what the Economist has called the ?Era of Big Data?.?

Where HRIQ identified eight HR trends ? and there are at least that many ? on a macro scale, technology and structural changes in the American labor force, are the trends propelling human resources from a tactical, functionary part of an organization, into a strategic partner on an equal footing with every other division represented at the big table.
