It Ain't Over: They Ditched Their Jobs In The Stock Market For Pickles

One of the reasons I started my website, is that I wanted a place for women to come together and dream. Women should know that they don't have to hang on to an old dream that has stopped nurturing them -- that there is always time to start a new dream. This week's story is about a stockbroker and her assistant who lost their jobs when the stock market went south. But rather than accept defeat, they launched a new career ? in pickles! ? By Lori Weiss

There was a time, not long ago, that if you walked by Jenny Stout?s office more than once in a day, you might have noticed that something had changed: her outfit. It wasn?t unusual for this North Carolina stockbroker to jump into her Lexus, drive over to the town square and buy something new -- simply because she was bored with what she was wearing.

But today, you?re much more likely to find "Miss Jenny" wearing a pair of shorts and a green shirt that she picked up at Goodwill. She has lots of green shirts. Green is her favorite color. But it has nothing to do with the color of the money she once managed.

"When you see me, I want you to think of pickles," Jenny laughed. "I want everyone to be thinking about pickles. I?m pretty sure not long from now, Beyonce will be changing the lyrics of her song from ?All the Single Ladies? to ?All the Pickle Ladies!?"

Jenny Stout and her former assistant Ashlee Furr have left the market and gone out into the garden -- in an attempt to prove that money really does grow on trees. Well, not exactly on trees, but on a half-acre of land next door to Jenny?s childhood home, where they?re planting the seeds to become the next big thing in pickles. It?s a far cry from the future they once bet on, but one that grew out of necessity.

"I was on vacation," Jenny remembered, "and Ashlee called to say she?d been laid off. It was the fall of 2009 and the stock market was volatile. I could see the writing on the wall; I spent the next two days in bed crying. I just knew they were going to close down our office and it wouldn?t be long before I was gone, too."

But Jenny Stout is not one to drown in her sorrows. Raised by her grandmother, whom she refers to as MawMaw, Jenny grew up on free school lunches and dinners that often came from her grandmother?s garden. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and worked her way up from being a secretary to managing $40 million dollars of other people?s money. So it didn?t take long for this self-made woman to choose her next step.

"My husband Bo and I were out on the front porch, where we solve the world?s problems, and he said, 'You make great pickles and you?ve got some land out at MawMaw?s, you should just start a pickle company.? And I knew right then that, with my grandmother?s recipe, Ashlee and I could be America?s First Ladies of Pickles."

Jenny was going back to her roots -- and taking Ashlee with her.

"I?d never picked a cucumber in my life!" Ashlee said with a grin. "I grew up in the heart of Atlanta. There were no gardens or fields anywhere. But when Jenny called, I was in her kitchen the next morning!"

But all the enthusiasm in the world couldn?t have prepared Ashlee for what would come next: "Jenny wanted to take me out to a cucumber farm so I could see how they grow. So I put on a little brown ruffled shirt, a white skirt and flip-flops. I thought I was looking pretty cute until Jenny drove up and burst out laughing. She said 'Didn?t you hear me when I said we were going to the farm?' Well, I didn?t know we?d be walking through the fields!"

Jenny wasn?t the only one laughing. The farmers in their community were as well, but not at Ashlee?s wardrobe. They couldn?t imagine how two women who had never grown anything but money were going to harvest a crop.

"One guy told us he was going to come up with an umbrella and a 12-pack and watch us pick cucumbers," Jenny recalled. "He said, 'That?s going to be a sight -- these two girls, stockbrokers -- thinking they?re really going to do this.'"

But do this they did. The two women kicked off their heels, got down on their hands and knees and planted enough seeds to grow 3,500 pounds of cucumbers. They spent three days in "pickle school" at North Carolina State University, where they learned everything they needed to know about canning and preserving. And not long after they returned, they were reaping the benefits of their investment -- a half-acre filled with five-inch long cucumbers.

"We?d cart them over to my church and prepare the pickles in its commercial kitchen," Jenny said. "You couldn?t walk into the chapel and not smell the vinegar. Then we?d take them over to Smitty?s, our local bar and grill, and ask people to taste them and tell us what they thought."

It wasn?t long before Jenny and Ashley had perfected three pickle varieties: the perfect salt-and-pepper, a traditional bread-and-butter version and a pickle with a little kick -- a jalapeno salt-and-pepper. Now all they needed was the perfect name.

"We wanted to name the company after my grandmother," Jenny sighed, "but we found out that a wafer company already had the trademark. So I called the owner -- since our products are so different-- and asked if she?d mind if we used the name for our pickles. She didn?t just say no, she said, 'Hell, no! We?re in Williams ?Sonoma!' So I said, 'Well, we?ll see you there!' We went ahead and named the company Miss Jenny?s Pickles, and that day, we made it our mission to be right there on those same shelves."

With that matter settled, the pickle ladies were ready to start selling and they weren?t starting small. Well, Jenny wasn?t. She?d set her sights on the Fancy Food Show in New York -- the largest specialty food and beverage event in North America. But Ashlee wasn?t so sure. She thought maybe they were biting off more than they could chew. It would be the first of many times the former stockbroker and assistant had to figure out how to work as partners.

"We both wanted Miss Jenny?s Pickles to be a household name," Jenny said. "There?s no question about that. But we realized at that moment that we had different ideas of what that meant. Ashlee wanted to be in every home in the South and I wanted to be in every refrigerator on earth. And my vision required us to get moving."

It wasn?t long before Jenny convinced her partner that the two of them could take on the world and that they were on their way to the big city. And there, amid the million-dollar displays, they set up a four-foot table and offered up Miss Jenny?s pickles to buyers from the most important grocery and gourmet stores in the country.

"We walked out with hundreds of business cards," Jenny said with delight, "including Whole Foods and Dean and Deluca!"

"Jenny stayed for the whole show, but I flew home early," Ashlee added. "I?d seen enough. I knew one of us better get back home and start making pickles."

That week, the partners began stocking the shelves at their local Harris Teeter stores and calls started pouring in. In fact, their sales multiplied so quickly that they had to begin buying cucumbers from other farmers and partner with a manufacturer to co-pack their pickles.

Now, only two years from the time they planted their first seed, Miss Jenny?s Pickles has already extended its line of products. The ladies have added an award-winning habanero bread-and-butter recipe and a fried pickle which they recently launched on QVC. By this fall, their items will be in 600 stores throughout the United States and China and just down the aisle from that little wafer company that gave them the big fight -- at Williams-Sonoma.

"Growing up, MawMaw always told me to stick in there and good things will happen," Jenny said, reaching for her friend?s hand. "I just know she?s watching over us and grinning from ear to ear.

"That, and telling all her friends, 'You know, my pickles have made it all the way to China!'"

  • The Original Pickle Ladies

After the economy began to take a turn for the worse, Jenny Stout (left) and her assistant, Ashley Furr (right), traded in their jobs in the stock market for a cucumber farm. And from a half-acre of family land together the two women gave life to Miss Jenny's Pickles.

  • Preparing For Pickling

Before Jenny and Ashlee started their business venture together, Ashlee had never picked a cucumber in her life. Born and raised a city girl, Ashlee learned quickly how to take a cucumber from seed to pickle. Here Ashlee is preparing the cucumbers to be canned.

  • Counting Product

When they first started out Jenny and Ashlee used the commercial kitchen at Fountain of Life Church to perfect their pickle recipes. Here, Ashlee is in the church kitchen counting jars of pickles.

  • Miss Jenny's Field

Jenny and Ashlee first started growing cucumbers for their business on a half-acre lot of land next to Jenny's childhood home. Today this sign stands in the cucumber field where many of Miss Jenny's Pickles are grown.

  • Media Darlings

In the two years since Miss Jenny's Pickles began, the story of Jenny and Ashlee has caught the attention of people across the nation. Here, Jenny poses with two of her favorite reporters Tanya Rivera and Steve Hoffbauer of North Carolina's WFMY. The pair of reporters have been following the story of Miss Jenny's Pickles since the very beginning.

  • In The Cucumber Field

At Miss Jenny's Pickles, picking cucumbers is a family affair. Here, Ashlee is in the field with her husband and their children, while a crew from MSNBC records footage for a story about the company.

  • In The Kitchen

As part of their story, the MSNBC team followed Jenny and her crew into the kitchen to see what happens with the cucumbers once they've been picked. At the end of the day the MSNBC team sampled some of Miss Jenny's Pickles and word is they all loved them!

  • On The Porch

It was on her front porch that Jenny dreamed up the idea for Miss Jenny's Pickles with the help of her husband. Here she is with the MSNBC crew filming an interview on the front porch of Maw Maw's home, where Jenny grew up.

  • Pickle Students

Preparing to take the pickle industry by storm, Jenny (left) and Ashlee (right) spent three days in "pickle school" at North Carolina State University, where they mastered the art of canning and preserving cucumbers.

  • Ribbon Cutting

Once the duo had perfected their pickle recipes, they headed out to the Fancy Food show in New York and from there orders for Miss Jenny's Pickles quickly began multiplying. Here, Jenny and Ashlee cut the ribbon at the grand opening of their company's warehouse.

  • A New Look

When Jenny and Ashlee first started making pickles, they perfected three varieties: salt and pepper, bread and butter and jalape?o salt and pepper. Today, they've begun to expand their product to include a habanero bread and butter pickle and even fried pickles. Here, is their line of pickles with new colored labels they created in January.

  • Producing Frickles

Recently, Miss Jenny's Pickles created a fried pickle recipe, which they call "frickles". Here, Ashlee (center left) is all geared up in her white coat in preparation of the production of "frickles" at Brooks Food Group.

  • Happy Sampling

Jenny and Ashlee first debuted their pickles nationally at the Fancy Food Show in New York, and from there, Miss Jenny's Pickles took off. Today, the duo still do samplings and food shows all over the country. Here, Miss Jenny's Pickles are in Nashville, Tennessee spreading their love for pickles.

  • Winners Of The Good Food Award

Critics tend to agree that Miss Jenny's Pickles are some of the best they've tried. In fact, in a blind tasting Miss Jenny's Pickles won the Good Food Award this year. Here, Ashlee (left) and Jenny (right) pose with the medal in San Francisco.

  • MawMaw & Jenny

Jenny's late grandmother, MawMaw (left) was a huge inspiration in Jenny's journey to start her company. In return, Jenny had hoped to name her company in her honor, but unfortunately there was a wafer company by the same name.

  • Miss Jenny's Pickles Take China

This past spring Jenny traveled to China to share Miss Jenny's Pickles at trade shows and visit the supermarkets that are already carrying Miss Jenny's Pickles. Here, Jenny (center) poses for a picture with her friends in business in Beijing.

Fish farm in 14th-floor Bronx apartment?

NEW YORK -- A Bronx man who runs a fish farm in his 14th-floor apartment is being sued by his landlord in a building where neighbors claim the tanks leak and stink up their homes.

The landlord claims Christopher Toole, 47, is violating his lease at the Riverdale building by illegally breeding fish and running the Society of Aquaponic Values and Education from the home, according to the New York Post.

He has "refused to refrain" from making noises and causing odors, the lawsuit says.

Read the story at NBCNewYork.com

"He's running a business out of his apartment," Errol Brett, the landlord for Windsor Apts. Inc., told the Post.

Neighbors say Toole is responsible for several large leaks and drags his fish farming materials across the floor through the night.

?It?s irritating because you hear noise all the time. It?s 3:30 in the morning, and you hear him dragging his aquarium or whatever it is across the floor. It has changed my life,?? resident Roch McDowell, who lives directly below Toole, told the paper.

Toole formerly worked at Morgan Stanley and served as a vice president for Sovereign Bank, according to the Post. He now teaches kids about fish farming and sells his tilapia.

He told the Post he was not aware of the suit, but said "any publicity is good publicity."

Green homes get green light from Planning Commission ...

At its special meeting on May 29, the Philadelphia City Planning Commission voted to approve the plan of development for Four Forty Four North Front Associates? proposed townhome development at 412 N. Front St.

Vacant lot proposed for Front Street townhome development

A previously unknown ghost street has altered developers' plans for green townhomes on this North Front Street lot. The City Planning Commission has given the revised project its blessing.

This project, which we caught wind of last month, has been modified a bit from its original design, a changed forced on the developers when their subsurface surveys found an eight-foot box culvert storm sewer running under the property in a 40-foot right of way for a street not marked on city plans.

As a result, the development will have only 32 townhomes, down from the 35 originally proposed. The ghost street will become the access point for the interior homes? garages and surface parking for the units facing Front Street.

The development?s noteworthy green features remain in place, including green roofs, extensive stormwater management features, a landscaped interior courtyard and street plantings that will also hide utility meters on Front Street.

As the project sits on a historically certified street paved in Belgian block, the developers pledged to replace any blocks damaged during construction. One commission member, however, noted that the street was already in not that great shape. On the whole, though, the commission praised the project for reflecting the goals of the city?s Central Delaware Waterfront Master Plan.

More details and architects? renderings to follow ? we?ll keep you posted.

Microsoft Is Biggest Winner in Google-Motorola Deal

And shareholders on both sides probably the biggest losers.

Someone, somewhere in Microsoft HQ in Redmond must have uttered a maniacal, guttural laugh on learning the news that Google wanted to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. The deal has now been closed and effectively makes Google a hardware & device manufacturer.

Announced back in August 2011, the move shocked the mobile arena and caused many to question Google's commitment to the relatively open nature of Android. Motorola would still be running as a separate business and would remain an Android licensee but those calming statements didn't prevent Google's market capitalisation from falling by $5 billion on that fateful day.

It is worth looking closely at the blog post written by Larry Page, the CEO of Google, announcing the completion of the acquisition. There's no mention of Android as an ecosystem. The quintessence of the post can be resumed in a few words; Motorola will make better mobile devices and will bring more money to Google. Hardly something partners will be happy to hear.

The reason why Microsoft should be smirking is that Windows Phone has become defacto the only real and credible alternative mobile platform to Google's Android. And the way Google pimped up the Motorola acquisition could encourage Open Handset Alliance handset manufacturers (all the 22 of them at the time of writing) to consider Microsoft Windows Phone as a mobile ecosystem.

Even if Microsoft has struck a strategic partnership with Nokia, I do not believe that the former will give any special preferences to the latter, especially as Microsoft is trying to raise the profile of Windows Phone (which according to analyst firm NetMarketShare has a smaller footprint than Amazon's Kindle) and cannot afford to leave any potential partners out, however small they may be.

'Bachelorette' Emily Maynard Discusses Her Approach To Dating On Reality TV

NEW YORK -- Emily Maynard's love affair with Brad Womack on "The Bachelor" might have ended with a broken engagement, but she's taking a different approach to being "The Bachelorette."

She said in a recent interview that this time around she's making sure to get to know her suitors.

"(With Womack) I don't know if I asked all the right questions that I should have, so you'll see me really getting to know the guys a lot better," Maynard said.

This season, the 26-year-old is grilling the guys competing for her affection over whether they're prepared to become a father.

Maynard is a single mom to 6-year-old Ricki, whose father, late NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, died in a plane crash in 2004. Maynard can't reveal whether she finds true love or gets engaged at the end of the season, but she does say she's happy she decided to take part in the show again.

"I hope that people can see how genuine I am in truly wanting to find somebody. I would never put myself through all this again if I didn't really believe in it," she said.

It was also important for Maynard to make sure the guys on the show were really interested in her and not just caught up in the competition.

"Every date I feel like I kind of repeated myself a lot because I wanted to make sure the guys were, you know, hopefully falling in love with me as a person and not with Emily `The Bachelorette' and I really wanted them to get to know me as me," she recalled.

ABC was definitely smitten with the idea of Maynard as its "Bachelorette." The network moved production of the show from Los Angeles to Charlotte, N.C., so Maynard could be with her daughter. It also made the experience a little more real.

"It was great because I could go out on these dates and also still do everyday mom stuff. I still had laundry to do and floors that needing vacuuming," she said.

Fast-forward 20 years and Maynard says she would hypothetically approve of her daughter one day being "The Bachelorette."

"I hope it never gets to this point for her, but I would because I had a great experience," Maynard said. "I want my daughter to be fearless and to follow her heart and her faith and do whatever that leads her to do, whether I approve or not."

"The Bachelorette" airs Mondays on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Smashing Samsung?s Galaxy S3 during review

When we get a product for review it?s great to test to the limits, although we?re also very careful to make sure we look after these devices, especially when they?re something that looks beautiful from a gadget perspective. This is completely where some reviewers disagree and has been seen with a Samsung Galaxy S3 review, which the video author wants to have a smashing good time.

Smashing Samsung?s Galaxy S3 during review

The last thing on our mind would be to smash up the new Galaxy S3 smartphone, although this is what you can see in the ?crash test? shown during the video below. Most of these tests are worthwhile if you like to know what happens when you drop your device on the floor from a height, although this video shows a Galaxy S3 getting bashed with a power plug, and while we find it hard to see when this might happen in the real world, it?s worth a watch if you have hit your display hard before.

Our readers that have a good eye will notice this is the Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S III ? the review was performed in Italy, so this shows another country with the Blue variety available. You might have seen a number of news reports stating there are problems getting this color, although we?d love to know if you have a color preference if you are in fact thinking of buying the Galaxy S3?

Later this year it will be interesting to see how the Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 reviews wrap up, of course until Apple reveal specs it will be compared on a rumor level only, although some people will make their minds up already based on the choice of iOS or Android.

Are you waiting for a Galaxy S3 release date in your country? If you live in Canada you?ll be pleased to know that rumors point to a June 20 launch, which should be on Virgin Mobile, TELUS, Rogers, and Bell. Those of you in the United States should expect the Galaxy S3 a little later than this, although we?d love to know your network preference between AT&T and Verizon? If you own a Galaxy Nexus you might want to read how to turn it into a Galaxy S3 here.

Samsung Galaxy S III heading to T-Mobile U.S. on June 20?

Android Central

The Samsung Galaxy S III is still real hot news, and quite rightly so. As we approach the impending international launch -- starting May 29 in case you forgot -- the big release date questions are still coming from eager Android fans in the US.?According to a rumor posted by?TmoNews,??for T-Mobile at least, the wait might not be too much longer.?

Apparently, the Pebble Blue variant of the Galaxy S III, in both 16GB and 32GB form, will be available from June 20. The 16GB Ceramic White version will then follow on July 11. This follows on from the leaked June 20 graphics showing availability north of the border in Canada. (And this latest leak also pegs the Galaxy Note for July 11, so there's that.)

Big disclaimer though folks as usual, this is a huge old scoop of rumor. Nothing short of what we'd expect with such a massive launch as this one. But Samsung did show off an enormous "U.S. in June" slide at the London keynote, so there is a possibility of there being something behind this one.?

Most voters doubt the Catholic Church would shut down schools, hospitals in protest at Obama

A view of St. Paul's Hospital. Credit: Brent Granby (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0).

.- A new survey shows that while more Americans are opposing the federal contraception mandate, the majority of voters also doubt that Catholic institutions would shut down rather than comply with the rule.

According to a May 22-23 Rasmussen poll, 51 percent of voters find it unlikely that Catholic organizations would shut down rather than buy insurance to cover abortifacients, sterilizations and contraceptives, as required by the Obama Administration's Health and Human Services mandate.

Although 43 Catholic institutions recently announced lawsuits against the federal government over the mandate, only 40 percent of voters believe it to be ?somewhat likely? that institutions would actually close their doors over the issue.

Sixteen percent believe such action to be ?very likely? while 17 percent think it would be ?not at all likely.?

Despite this doubt, 51 percent of voters disagree that the government should force religious organizations to provide contraception coverage if it violates their beliefs. Thirty-six percent of voters support this policy even if it violates religious beliefs.

Overall support of the mandate has fallen slightly when compared to those surveyed in a Feb. 7 poll. Of those questioned in the most recent poll, only 39 percent of voters favor the mandate as compared to the 43 percent who supported it in an earlier poll.

This new poll indicates a slight rise in women's opposition to the mandate, with female voters now evenly split over the issue. Men still overwhelmingly disagree with the mandate, with 52 percent in opposition and 34 percent in favor.

Breeze of Arab Spring felt on Cannes red carpet

(AP) ? The ripples of the Arab Spring are being felt in summery Cannes, where films from Egypt and Syria, as well as a passionate documentary about the overthrow of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, are being screened alongside the latest features from the world's heavyweight directors.

On Friday the festival lineup included "The Oath of Tobruk," a highly personal insiders' account of the uprising by writer and philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, who was accompanied to a photo call by masked Libyan fighters.

In the film, made with photographer Marc Roussel, Levy gives a robust defense of Western military intervention in Libya ? and calls for the world to do the same in Syria, where the regime of President Bashar Assad has been fighting an uprising for more than a year.Levy ? often known simply as BHL ? is a leading public intellectual in France, where he is known for his impassioned political interventions, dapper dress and mane of salt-and-pepper hair.

The movie is revealing about the background to the Libyan conflict, as Levy's bulging contacts book delivers interviews with Nicolas Sarkozy, David Cameron and U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, as well as with members of Libya's new political and military leadership.

Levy was pivotal in persuading Sarkozy, then France's president, to back air strikes to aid the Libyan rebels, a decision taken up by Cameron, the British leader, and later by President Barack Obama.

Dismissed by critics as an egotist, Levy is not shy about extolling his place in history, explaining in the film's voiceover his personal desire to overthrow a dictator and right a wrong that has been gnawing at him for 20 years ? "the bleeding wound of Bosnia," where he says intervention could have saved thousands of lives.

"I've borne the sorrow and the mourning of Bosnia for 20 years," Levy told The Associated Press. "And this is what Sarkozy, Cameron and Clinton say (in the film)? we did this because of Bosnia. Nevermore Bosnia. Nevermore Srebrenica."

The film, which has been picked up by the Weinstein Co. for distribution in the United States, is open to the criticism of self-centeredness. Some may prefer to see the Libyan story told by Libyans.

"I am sure the Libyans will themselves tell the story of their liberation and their revolution," Levy said. "This is my version. It's personal, subjective. I tell things I was part of and only this. I don't pretend to any exhaustiveness. It is my part of truth."

Levy used the platform of Cannes to urge the international community to take direct military action in support of the rebels in Syria ? something for which there is, as yet, little appetite among governments.

"Syria is a scandal," Levy said. "Syria is a shame. All those who say that situations are difficult are just trying to find excuses for their cowardice. If I had a wish today, it would be to make people understand that what was doable in Benghazi is doable in Homs, Aleppo and Deraa."

Elsewhere at the festival, Arab filmmakers are telling stories ? often against considerable odds.

Bassam Chekhes is the first Syrian director ever to be in competition at Cannes, with his short film "Waiting for P.O. Box."

The director said coming to Cannes was "a dream" ? and a vital link to other filmmakers around the world.

"The festival, when you are around you can fell the similarity of our humanity and the feeling that we are 30 year old men who have the same problem all round the world," he said.

One of the 22 films competing for the Palme d'Or is "After the Battle," by Egypt's Yousry Nasrallah.

The story of the relationship between a wealthy Tahrir Square revolutionary and a poor horseman from the Pyramids who has been involved in an attack on protesters, it was filmed in the chaotic interval between the overthrow of Mubarak and this week's presidential election in Egypt.

Nasrallah said the film crew members were worried about intimidation from supporters of the former regime or Islamists who condemn cinema as a sin. They filmed using a code name to make the movie sound like a romantic comedy.

The director said movie makers have a duty to be bold, despite political uncertainty and the rising influence of religious fundamentalists.

"Arab cinema is trying to liberate itself," he told reporters. "It is trying to break censorship taboos and social taboos. Because this is the only way you can make movies.

"You don't want to go watch a film where you feel the film itself is a prison. You want to feel the filmmaker is liberated and thus liberating you too."

Obama is ahead in swing states, but his lead narrows

(Kristoffer Tripplaar-Pool/Getty Images)President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in Florida, Ohio and Virginia, according to new polls of the key 2012 swing states, although Obama's advantage has narrowed in recent months.

Obama leads Romney 48 percent to 44 percent in both Florida and Virginia, according to three new NBC News/Marist polls. In Ohio, the president has a 6-point advantage over Romney, leading his Republican rival 48 percent to 42 percent among registered voters in the state. (The polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.)

Despite the good news, there are signs of danger for the Obama campaign. In March, the same polls found Obama with a 12-point lead over Romney in Ohio and a 17-point lead in Virginia. In January, the poll had Obama besting Romney by 8 points in Florida.

A few key findings benefit Obama. A majority of voters in all three states believe the "worst is behind us" when it comes to the economy, according to the polls?though less than 40 percent of voters think the economy will get better over the next year. Meanwhile, 57 percent of voters in Ohio and Virginia and 56 percent in Florida think Obama "inherited" the struggling economy?a finding that could test Romney's argument that Obama's policies made things worse for the country.

Yet Obama and Romney are statistically tied in all three states when it comes to the question of which candidate would best handle the economy. A plurality of voters in these states believe Romney is the best candidate to handle the national debt.

While Romney's numbers are on the rebound, the polls found one key hurdle for the presumptive Republican nominee: His favorability numbers continue to lag behind Obama's.

In Ohio and Virginia, Obama holds a 10-point advantage or more over Romney when it comes to the percentage of voters who hold a "favorable" impression of the candidate. In Florida, the margin is narrower, but voters are still statistically split on how they view Romney: 45 percent hold a favorable view, compared to 43 percent who hold an unfavorable one.
