HBT: Rangers' prospect Profar, 19, homers in 1st at-bat

Sometimes it feels like this stuff has to be scripted.

Rangers?prospect?Jurickson Profar crushed a pitch into the right field stands in his first major league plate appearance Sunday at Cleveland?s Progressive Field, becoming the youngest player to homer in a major league game since Adrian Beltre in 1998.

MLB.com already has the video highlight.

Profar, a 19-year-old shortstop, was promoted to the Rangers? active roster on Saturday and is getting his first taste of action Sunday at second base with Ian Kinsler fighting a sore back.

The?Curacao native was batting .281/.368/.452 with 14 homers and 62 RBI in 126 games at Double-A Frisco before his call-up. He should get a couple of starts per week down the stretch for first-place Texas.

********************

UPDATE, 2:35 PM: Profar hit a double to left field in his second at-bat and popped out in his third.

UPDATE, 3:23 PM: Profar flied out to center field in his fourth trip to the plate. He finished 2-for-4.

Everything You Need To Know About Personal Development ...

In order to develop a positive personality it is good to know what your priorities are. It is a good habit to always avoid procrastination at all costs. The longer we wait to do something the less likely it is for us to do it in the best possible way.

If your thoughts are negative, it colors everything about your day. Engage in some positive thinking for a quick and straightforward challenge to the way you conduct yourself in your day to day life. Positive thinking is an amazing and powerful tool for personal development, so do not skimp on this process!

Take the time to cook a good meal. If you are loading you body with quick bites to eat from the fast food restaurant or convenience store, you are surely not getting the nutrients that your body needs to perform to its potential and this can leave you feeling stressed and angry.

Don?t be afraid of change. Many people have a well-founded fear of change. After all, why change something if you are comfortable? The problem is, the world is constantly changing, whether we change with it or not. Instead of seeking out a comfort zone, embrace change. Learn from it and soon you will be able to adapt to anything the world throws at you!

Try to avoid potential triggers. Many people have specific things that trigger their poor moods or episodes. To avoid unnecessary stress and anxiety, try to avoid the trigger. Stay out of situations that might upset you. Try to resist visiting websites or forums that might contain content that could upset you.

Another thing you can consider when you are trying to better yourself, your career and your perspectives and outlooks on life is to live life for yourself! Do not consider what other people may want you to do, say or act as this inhibits your own individual growth on so many levels.

Before you allow yourself to react in anger, ask yourself this: What is the worst possible consequence that could arise from giving in to my anger? More often than not, you will find that the worst possible outcome ? violence, legal problems, jail- is simply not worth the brief release of giving in to your temper.

Use positive affirmations to counteract negative thoughts and comments. When you find yourself dwelling on a piece of negativity, whether it comes from your own doubts or from someone else, put it out of your mind. You need a positive affirmation that contradicts the negative thought. Use an existing affirmation or create a new one and repeat it to yourself 20 times.

Educate yourself. Reading books is a great way to keep your mind exercised as you work towards your self-improvement goals. You can find classic books on the subject of self-help, but even reading books about your country?s history or your favorite hobby can do wonders. Not only will you gain knowledge, but your mind will also remain sharp.

Listen to your body. If you want to improve aspects of your life, you need the power of your mind. When your brain is telling you that you are hungry, tired, restless or bored, listen to it and respond. Treat your body and mind well if you want it to work in your benefit in the future.

Be timely and reliable. There is no such thing as being fashionably late. Late is late and no one truly appreciates it. If you are responsible for a certain job be sure you deliver on time. You will gain the reputation of being the one everyone can rely on and the awards could, potentially at least, be great!

Make your work environment better looking. Put up pictures of things and people you love, bring plants and generally cheer up your immediate work environment. Seeing the people you love will motivate you, and beautifying your work environment will make you feel better about working so that you can do your best.

It is true that money cannot actually buy you happiness. It can, however, supplement you with things that can lead to your happiness. For example, it may make you happy to own your own home business. By buying things like a new desk or a new computer to do this, you are supplementing your happiness using money. Your happiness should never depend on new things, at the same time, happiness is not lnked to an austere existence either. Just aim for a nice balance.

Happiness and peace are a state of mind that everyone would like to inhabit, but coping mechanisms from long ago may not be getting you the state of mind you are seeking. Developing yourself through avenues such as your senses and your intuition allows for a deeper sense of self and the peaceful state of mind you seek.

Why Others Failed at Internet Income University

Internet Income University offers training and support on internet marketing to home-based entrepreneurs so they can succeed in their online business. Now, there is no reason to overemphasize the importance of having the internet marketing know-how in online business. It?s simply like this. About 95% of indivuduals failed in their online business because, among other crucial reasons, they lack the knowledge and skills in web marketing.

?

In particular, Internet Income University (IIU) trains its members to strategically position their business online so it becomes more visible to potential clients. To do this, IIU provides training on traffic generation, a proven internet marketing strategy widely used to promote ones site on the internet. But here?s the thing. This involves so much work. And the task can be overwhelming to individuals who are new in the trade. Although IIU will walk you through the process, you alone will bear the bulk of the responsiblity. This is the reason why there are some members of the program who failed. They simply lacked the determination or the patience to stick it out through the end. The good news is that you will find out that your patience and hard work will pay off in the end.

?

If you think about it, regardless of the strength of the program or the effectiveness of a system, unless you put in your share of hard work, perseverance and desire to succeed you will definitely fail. To learn more about IIU and what else it can offer you, check out relevant information online or you can go here for an?in-depth review?of the program. ? ? ??

Romney visits gulf as Obama tends to troops

FORT BLISS, Texas? His convention turn coming fast, President Barack Obama on Friday began sprinting toward one of his last, best shots to win over voters, ready to promise better days even for those who do not feel better off. Rival Mitt Romney, flush with confidence after his party's convention, declared: "We love this country and we're taking it back."

Both angling for the aura of leadership, Romney swooped in on rain-drenched Louisiana, while Obama stood with troops in Texas and reminded the nation that he ended the war in Iraq. Obama, too, will visit storm-battered Louisiana on Monday, a move the White House said was decided before Romney revealed his plans.

The race for the White House suddenly felt more urgent, a final heated day of August giving way to a two-month stretch in which many voters will get serious about making their choices?or even voting for one in the states that allow early balloting.

The political buzz followed Romney, hours after a convention speech in which he introduced himself to America and asked on-the-fence voters to let go of a president who "has disappointed America." A rambling, surprising and strange appearance by movie legend Clint Eastwood at the GOP event still had people talking, too.

But attention was shifting to Obama, the incumbent who gets the last shot at making a lasting impression before the October debates.

His party's national convention, which starts Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., will

dwell less on how life is now and more on where voters want their lives to be. Obama inherited an economy in the midst of a monster recession, and the pace of the stable, sluggish recovery is perhaps Obama's greatest burden to re-election.

The coming days, capped by Obama's speech on Thursday night, will crystalize his re-election pitch: An economy built on ending tax cuts for the rich and putting more effort into education, energy, tax reform and debt reduction. He will call Romney a peddler of failed trickle-down ideas that will hurt the middle class and the needy.

Building by the day, the convention roll-in for Obama will take him through the battleground states of Iowa, Colorado, Ohio and Virginia. At the event itself, first lady Michelle Obama will command the stage one night, followed the next by Bill Clinton, who will ask voters to remember the good times and pledge Obama can return them.

To put a face on the election message, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be joined on political stops by what their campaign calls "American Heroes," such as a student or teacher or veteran whose life story reflects Obama's agenda. The Democratic National Convention will also feature them.

Romney kept up a campaign pace out of his convention, with plans for stops in Ohio and Florida on Saturday before a quieter stretch into Labor Day.

Friday was a pivot point, but hardly a breather in the window between the two conventions.

Before heading separately out of Tampa, Romney and running mate Paul Ryan wooed the voters of powerful Florida, which went for Obama in 2008.

"Hold us accountable. Listen to what we have to say," Romney said. "I plan on winning in Florida. We love this country and we're taking it back."

Romney shook up his itinerary, as he had hinted, to get to Louisiana and inspect Hurricane Isaac's damage. It was the kind of trip better associated with a president than a presidential candidate?Romney has no authority to direct help?but he did draw attention to the plight of victims there. The White House offered no complaints.

In the town of Jean Lafitte, Romney's motorcade plowed through water that at some points was a foot or deeper, passing flooded homes, lawns and businesses. Residents stood in the water and watched the presidential candidate's caravan pass. Romney spoke with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and explained that he had come down to listen, learn, lure some media coverage and make sure "the people around the country know that people down here need help."

For Obama, it was a day of official events, not campaigning, although with 67 days to go until Election Day there is little distinction.

Surrounded by troops in camouflage, he appeared as commander in chief more than candidate, announcing steps to help war veterans cope with mental health struggles. Yet the visit also served as an election-year reminder that he closed out the Iraq war and has pledged an end to the Afghanistan war at the end of 2014.

"We're not just ending these wars," he said. "We're doing it in a way that keeps America safe and makes America stronger, and that includes our military."

The No. 2 men on the ticket covered other electoral ground.

In Richmond, Va., GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan warned that without Romney in charge, "our children are going to get a diminished future."

Further north, Biden was at a union hall in Lordstown, Ohio, directing his aim at Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, and other Republicans for having voted for measures that drove up the debt they criticize. "I mean who did it? How did we get here? Look, there is a lot they didn't tell you at their convention."

The economy has shown varying signs of trouble and hope, but is largely expected to stay as is through the election and unlikely to change the equation for Obama and Romney. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday pledged more action to provide a jolt, but did not get specific.

Obama chose North Carolina for his 2012 convention as a way to cement support in a state he surprisingly won in 2008, but he trails Romney there. The candidates continue to put their time and money into the states they consider in play, from Nevada and Colorado out West to Florida, Virginia and Ohio in the East.

Genetic link to prostate cancer risk in African Americans found

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? Prostate cancer in African-American men is associated with specific changes in the IL-16 gene, according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.

The study, published online in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, establishes the association of IL-16 with prostate cancer in men of both African and European descent.

"This provides us with a new potential biomarker for prostate cancer," says principal investigator Rick Kittles, UIC associate professor of medicine in hematology/oncology.

Previously identified changes in the gene for IL-16, an immune system protein, were associated with prostate cancer in men of European descent. But the same changes in the gene's coded sequence -- called "polymorphisms" -- did not confer the same risk in African Americans.

Doubt was cast on IL-16's role in prostate cancer when researchers were unable to confirm that the IL-16 polymorphisms identified in whites were also important risk factors in African Americans, Kittles said.

Kittles and his colleagues used a technique called imputation -- a type of statistical extrapolation -- that allowed them to see new patterns of association and identify new places in the gene to look for polymorphisms. They found changes elsewhere in the IL-16 gene that were associated with prostate cancer and that were unique to African Americans.

Polymorphisms result from DNA mutations and emerge in the ancestral history of different populations. People of African descent are much more genetically diverse than whites, Kittles said, making the search for polymorphisms associated with disease more difficult.

Although the effect of the particular changes to the gene appear to be different in men of African versus European descent, it is likely that several of the polymorphisms in the gene alter the function of the IL-16 protein.

"This confirms the importance of IL-16 in prostate cancer and leads us in a new direction," Kittles said. "Very little research has been done on IL-16, so not much is known about it."

"We now need to explore the functional role of IL-16 to understand the role it is playing in prostate cancer," he said.

Ken Batai, graduate student in the UIC Institute for Human Genetics, was first author of the study. Other authors were Ebony Shah, Jennifer Newsome, and Maria Ruden of the UIC Institute for Human Genetics; Adam Murphy of Northwestern University; and Chiledum Ahaghotu of Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

The Liebster Award ? My Creative Writing Outlet

Welcome all to my corner of the web. And now, as Monty Python say, to something different.

In recent weeks, I was exposed to an interesting and active blog ? Sandscriber. I was surprised, although not altogether unhappy to be nominated to the Leibster Award. What is it? I don?t really know, but beggars can?t be choosers, right?

The way it works is simple. Once you get nominated, you?re tasked with answering 11 questions posed to you by the blog who nominated you. Unlike chain letters, there?s no threat of disaster occurring should you decide to shy away (chicken) from the challenge and avoid posing 11 questions of your own to 11 other blogs.

The way I see it is, you get to write something with the certainty that someone actually wants to read it. You get other bloggers writing and thus participate in a fun exercise as well as giving others reasons to write, and after all, why are we here?

That being said, let me dive in to the Q&A session:

1. Do you deal well with negative feedback?

I?ll go right ahead and admit that this is a ?work in progress?. I?d like to answer ?Yes? but I?d also like to be honest? I do my best to take negative feedback as constructive criticism and focus on what I can take from it rather than on my feelings and ego. I am not a 100% there yet, as my writing coach will attest :) The good thing is that while I might be a little?defensive?at times, I go home and think about it and in 9 cases out of 10 I?ll be able to get the ?honey? out of the bitterness. In one of my most popular posts (The Lonely Writer) I wrote a bit about the importance of ?brutal honesty? which basically means ? In order to improve, one absolutely has to hear the truth. And the truth is that we can all do BETTER.

What did I do wrong???

2. What is one post of yours you think is over/underrated

Overrated ? I feel that way about a lot of my posts. Unfortunately I often go back and think ?If only I could have done a better job at that one?. But I dare not edit, since that would be against what I?m trying to achieve here, which in part is a journey to become better at writing.

Underrated ? I don?t like patting myself on the shoulder (yeah, right), but some of the ?off topic? ones are really cool to me. Especially the ones related to music. But then again, there?s a reason they?re called ?Off topic? :)

3. Why should people follow your blog?

I?d like to think that it?s interesting and fun? I also hope that information, experiences and opinions might prove helpful, especially to?aspiring writers as well as?first time novelists like myself. And if by any stretch I?m able to ***shiver*** inspire anyone with anything positive, then I?m absolutely happy.

Help

4. Why do you blog

There are four main reasons:

Improvement ? The first lesson in writing for me was ? write. Write as much as you can, as often as you can. The more I write (and I obviously write much more than the blog), the better I hopefully get.

Help ? As I mentioned in Q#3, I hope that through reading about my experiences and thoughts, other aspiring writers might get something. Ideas, directions, some knowledge, and not the least important ? support! Many people start writing thinking it?s easy only to realize the challenges they face once they really get into it. I hope no one who reads my blog get discouraged. If I can help even a single person in any way, This blog has done its job.

Discussion ? I try to voice my opinion clearly and I hope that people engage in discussion.

Exposure ? I?d be lying through my teeth if I?d say I?m not hoping that this blog reaches many readers and serve as a way for them to ?read my voice?. Of course, writing a novel is one thing and a blog quite the other, but writing is writing.

Blogging

5. What is one thing you want to do but can?t yet.

This might sound too ?new age-y? or holistic or whatever you want to call it, but I sincerely believe that there?s no such thing. So I won?t make it to the moon, that?s true, but everything I set my mind to (As many a parent said) I can achieve. In fact, I already have achieved some of these ?goals? which I set for myself in the past, and as we speak I?m working on one of the most important ones to me ? publishing a novel. To learn more about why I feel this way you can go back to my post about Ho?opononpono.

Dr. Hew Len and Mabel Katz

6. How does your dream holiday look like?

In two words ? Costa Rica :)

In more than two words, I?d like to simply spend most of the time on the beach, listening to the sounds of the ocean, as they filter through mildly alcohol induced therapeutic slumber. I wish I could say that my wife would be right next to me, but that?s not her style of vacationing. She?ll likely be doing some extreme sports and engaged in some exploration of the environment.

Between one sleep and the other, I?d be reading the complete collections of Isaac Asimov, Robert Silverberg and Tad Williams.

Obviously this would take a moment :)

Costa Rica

7. If you could give yourself a superpower, which one would you give?

I recently saw a nice photo on Facebook saying ?I write fiction, what?s your superpower?? and I absolutely love it. We do have that power. Who else can make or break anything with nothing but words?

Among the most popular ones, I?d simply enjoy the ability to fly. Corny? I don?t care.

What?s your superpower?

8. Most annoying celebrity.

I?m doing my absolute best to stay away from that? the last one I saw that was really?embarrassingly?annoying was that orange thing called Snooki. It represents everything I can?t stand about TV ?these days?. Famous for being famous?

Orange

?

9. Favorite book/tv-show/movie?

Book ? I can?t?possibly?decide on one? 1984 (Orwell), Otherland (Tad Williams), Foundation (Asimov), The man in the maze (Robert Silverberg) among many others.

TV Show ? Here there?s absolutely no problem - Homicide: Life on the street?was the best TV show in history.

Movie ? A toss-up between Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter.

10. Best decision you ever made?

Other than to get married and have kids (What can I say, I?m good at it :) ), I?d have to say that the decision to get a college education significantly helped me achieve many goals, and being opened to new ways of thinking (Ho?oponopono) proved very beneficial.

College

11. Worst musician in the world.

I?m not sure I want to answer this one :) I?m really trying to keep things positive, but I?ll go ahead and say that one pair of alleged musicians who never really did anything to me were a band called Modern Talking. Now that was painful?

Doesn?t look modern now, does it?

I hope that was interesting and fun. It certainly was for me.

I will challenge some bloggers in the next couple of days with questions of my own, so beware internet! :)
